Altenstadt is a fraction of the city of Feldkirch in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg . They, together with the political groups Gisingen and Levis the same cadastral and Zählsprengel the city.

history

Traces of the first settlement in Altenstadt came to light in the 1950s, when the remains of the almost 3,000-year-old Late Bronze Age cult site were found. Today's Altenstadt area was ideal for settlement because of its convenient location at the entrance to the valley between Ardetzenberg and Tillis. During excavations carried out in May and June 2006, a Roman building that was used between the second half of the 3rd century and the 4th century was uncovered according to coin finds in late antiquity .

The place was originally called Feldkirch ( Feldkirichun, Veldkiricha and others spellings, e.g. after the Rhaetian land register of 850 AD). It was named after a church in the field that was still very sparsely populated at the time. It is generally assumed that this is the St. Petronilla Church, built in the 9th century (today the St. Petronilla and Martin chapel), but it could also have been named after the mother church St. Peter in Petersfeld in today's Rankweil .

With the construction of the Schattenburg a few kilometers south directly at the valley exit of the Ill from the Walgau , a new settlement emerged in the 11th and 12th centuries, for which the name Feldkirch was adopted and which gradually developed into the town of Feldkirch . The original Feldkirch, located further north, was therefore called Alte Statt (from around the 14th century) , from which the current name Altenstadt developed.

The old municipality of Altenstadt used to include Levis, Gisingen and the four villages within the Ill : Nofels, Fresch, Bangs and Matschels.

The city of Feldkirch was linked to Groß-Feldkirch in 1925 together with the communities of Altenstadt, Tosters and Tisis.

Buildings

Petronilla Chapel

The chapel of St. Petronilla and Martin is one of the oldest church buildings in Vorarlberg and, as a church in the field, is the origin of the name Feldkirch.

Dominican convent

Monastery and parish church

There is also a Dominican convent founded in the 13th century in Altenstadt with a baptistery consecrated in 1442 and frescoes from the 15th century. There is a legend about the Fidelis fountain in the inner courtyard of the monastery that it only carried water after the invocation of Saint Fidelis.

Building of the TC Altenstadt

Architecturally noteworthy is the building of the Altenstadt tennis club ( TC Altenstadt ) , which was built in 2000 . The two-story building is characterized by a clear design language and a consciously reduced choice of materials.

Educational institutions

In Altenstadt there is an elementary school, two kindergartens and the Bundesgymnasium Feldkirch , which is often wrongly assumed to be in Levis .
