Altona is a suburb of Melbourne in Australia , approximately 13 km southwest of Melbourne city center. Your local government area is the city of Hobsons Bay . The 2011 census found a population of 9,918.

Altona is a large suburb with loose housing developments in the southeast and an industrial area in the northwest. A standout facility is Altona Beach on the shores of Port Phillip Bay, one of only two swimmers' beaches in Melbourne's western suburbs (the other is Williamstown Beach ).

Altona got its name from the then still independent German city of Altona , today a district of Hamburg .

history

Before the arrival of European immigrants who settled in the area of Altona Kurung-Jang-Balluk , Aborigines of the tribe of Woiwurrung . It is believed that 40 people lived there at the time of European immigration.

Altona was first permanently settled in 1842 when Alfred Longhorne built The Homestead . The name Altona first appeared on maps in 1861. The settlement was named by a German named Tägtow , who moved from Altona near Hamburg. Thinking that coal would be found in the area, Tägtow founded the Williamstown (Taegtow) Prospecting Company . From 1886 houses and land were put up for sale on Altona Street and Merton Street, and from 1901 to 1962 the Victoria government operated the Truganina explosives store in western Altona.

On February 20, 1911, JJ Hammond carried out the first overland flight between Australian cities, which ran from Altona Bay to Geelong . On February 23, 1911, he carried out Australia's first passenger flight, also from the Bay of Altona.

Coal mining formed the basis of the local economy between 1908 and 1919, but it was abandoned in 1930 when the open pit mine opened in the Latrobe Valley .

Since 1918 there were enough residents for the opening of a post office, which took place on January 14, 1918.

Like the other places in the Melbourne area, Altona had to cope with a large influx of immigrants after the Second World War , mainly from the Mediterranean region , Central Europe and to a lesser extent from the Middle East .

Altona had been a town in the Werribee area since 1862 , but in 1957 the Altona area, which included Altona itself and the suburbs of Altona North and Altona Meadows , was amalgamated and declared the Altona Local Government Area in 1968. This went in 1994, decreed by the federal government under Jeff Kennett , in the Local Government Area Hobsons Bay.

On June 24, 2010, Julia Gillard , a resident of Altona, was elected chairwoman of the Australian Labor Party , making it the 27th Australian Prime Minister. Gillard said she would not move to The Lodge until she was confirmed as Prime Minister by the Australian people.

Parks and gardens

Altona has many outstanding parks and gardens, as well as some important nature reserves and wetlands on the coast of Port Phillip Bay, which are also used as recreational areas by residents and visitors, including a long promenade along the coast.

Schools and education

Altona has three elementary schools, Altona Primary School , Altona College, and St. Mary's Catholic Primary School . As secondary schools there are the Mount St. Joseph Girls' College and the Altona Secondary College (formerly: Altona College ; name changed since 2007).

Altona has a public library that includes the Environmental Resources Center . This center gives the population access to documents about the environmental initiatives in Hobsons Bay, such as: B. to improve the environmental friendliness of the local industry.

Culture

The Altona Bayside Festival is held annually to promote the western suburbs of Melbourne and the Hobsons Bay district and to keep residents entertained. It consists of various actions over a weekend, such as B. a parade on March 15, 2009, an arts and homework exhibition, competitions, professional entertainers and fireworks. It was held for the 30th time in 2007. The festival used to be called Operation Recreation and some residents still call it that today. It received increased attention in 2002 when it appeared on the local TV channel GTV Channel 9 's Postcards , presented by Geoff Cox . The parade is regularly interrupted by local trains passing through the nearby Altona train station. The Australian Boy Scouts is as big a theme at the parade as the public activities in the Cherry Lake Reserve .

The Altona City Theater is a production company in the Altona Civic Theater , which annually releases two musicals and a smaller pantomime. The pantomime takes place at the same time as the Bayside Festival and was originally intended as a presentation for young theater directors.

The Australian Boy Scouts have two groups in Altona, one in Scout Hall and one in Pines , an old camp owned by Hobsons Bay County Council.

Sports

Altona offers many sports clubs, e.g. B. for Australian football , soccer , hockey , basketball , cricket and lacrosse . The Melbourne Ballpark is a baseball field in the west of Altona.

The suburb has an Australian football team that plays in the Western Region Football League .

The Altona Roosters are the local rugby team that play at Loft Reserve near Newport . The Roosters currently lead the Victorian Rugby League and face increased competition for the title from the Casey Sharks .

Golfers play at the Kooringal Golf Club on Wilga Avenue.

In addition, the beach directly west of the Altona pier is one of the most famous spots in the Melbourne area for kitesurfing .

The three train stations in Altona are Altona , Westona and Seaholme , all on the Werribee Line .

In addition, the bus routes 411, 412, 415 and 903 of the Melbourne transport company go to Altona.

The Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail is a combined walking and cycling route along the coast of Port Phillip Bay through Altona. It is connected to a path around Cherry Lake. The main main roads are also equipped with cycle paths.

Industry and commerce

The local economy consists of mineral oil storage , manufacturing and retail . In the 1970s and 1980s there were many complaints from the population about pollution, but strict controls, local environmental projects involving industry, the government and environmental groups have reduced the problems and cleaned up stretches of coast that were previously neglected.

There is a Toyota Australia plant on the outskirts of Altona , where the Camry and Aurion models are built. 80% of the production is exported.
