Chumpon Buri ( Thai : อำเภอ ชุมพลบุรี ) is a district ( Amphoe ) in the northwest corner of the Surin Province. The Surin Province is located in the northeast region of Thailand , the so-called Isan .

Neighboring districts (from north clockwise): Amphoe Phayakkhaphum Phisai the province of Maha Sarakham , Amphoe Kaset Wisai in the province of Roi Et , Amphoe Tha Tum province Surin and Amphoe Satuek , Khaen Dong , Khu Mueang and Phutthaisong in Buriram Province .

history

The area has been inhabited for at least 5000 years, as evidenced by Neolithic terracotta figures found in Chumpon Buri. It was later settled by the Munda people, who immigrated from the west and are probably the ancestors of today's Kui. The district belonged to the Funan Empire in the first centuries AD , then to Chenla, and from the 10th century to the Khmer Empire .

The circle goes back to Mueang Chumphon Buri. In the administrative reforms at the end of the 19th century, it became a district (Amphoe) .

After the eastern part of the district was split off on February 22, 1937 to form the new district of Tha Tum, the now much smaller district was downgraded to a "branch district" ( King Amphoe ) on March 4, 1937 . On February 20, 1953 it was again declared a full circle (Amphoe) .

economy

The ( Mon - Khmer -) ethnic group of the Kui is known, among other things, for the elephants they keep, which are also shown to tourists in corresponding shows (for example in Krapo, Tha Tum and Na Nongphai). The dominant industry in Chumpon Buri is agriculture. Above all, the younger population is moving to the larger cities. Otherwise the usual Buddhist temples can be found in the communities of the district; cultural life is characterized by regular folk festivals.

  • Celebrations:
    • Eel Festival (Thai: เทศกาล งาน ปลา ไหล ) - The festival is celebrated with a fair in the third week of December, when the harvest is in. At this time the farmers can catch a lot of eels ( Monopterus albus ), which now turn yellow and no longer smell fishy.

There are five municipalities with "small town" status ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district:

  • Thung Si Chumphon (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ทุ่ง ศรี ชุมพล ) comprises parts of the Tambon Chumphon Buri.
  • Na Nong Phai (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล นา หนองไผ่ ) includes the entire tambon Na Nong Phai.
  • Yawuek (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ยะ วึ ก ) includes the entire tambon Yawuek.
  • Sa Khut (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล สระ ขุด ) includes the entire tambon Sa Khut.
  • Chumphon Buri (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ชุมพลบุรี ) includes the remaining parts of the Tambon Chumphon Buri.
