Amphoe Mueang Chaiyaphum ( Thai อำเภอ เมือง ชัยภูมิ ) is a district ( Amphoe - Administrative District) in the south of the Chaiyaphum Province . The province of Chaiyaphum is located in the west of the northeast region of Thailand , the so-called Isan .

location

The district of Mueang Chaiyaphum is located on the edge of the Khorat plateau , about 340 kilometers northeast of the capital Bangkok .

Neighboring districts are (from north clockwise): Amphoe Kaset Sombun , Kaeng Khro and Khon Sawan province Chaiyaphum, Amphoe Kaeng Sanam Nang and Amphoe Ban Lueam the province of Nakhon Ratchasima and Amphoe Noen Sa-nga , Ban Khwao and Nong Bua Daeng again in Chaiyaphum.

Large parts of the two national parks Phu Laenkha and Tat Ton are located in the district.

The name comes from the ancient Indian language Sanskrit Jaya (Chaiya) means victory and Bhumi (Phum) means field, country or place. Translated, Chaiyaphum means "land of victory" or "field of victory".

history

The district has been a transit station for Khmer and Laotian troops from the earliest days of Sukhothai . Perhaps that is why there was a hospital here as early as the 12th century . Later she was subject to the local principality of Nakhon Ratchasima. The commander Phraya Phakdi Chumphon renounced this supremacy and handed the city (then still Ban Luang) to King Nang Klao ( Rama III. ) In 1824 . In gratitude, he became the first head of the city renamed Chaiyaphum. When the Laotians launched an attack on Bangkok a short time later, Phraya Phakdi Chumphon, among others, opposed them. The Laotians were repulsed, but the remainder were able to take the poorly defended Chaiyaphum. In the fighting that followed, Phraya Chumphon was killed.
