André Barsacq

André Barsacq (born February 5, 1909 in Feodosia , Russia , † February 3, 1973 ) was a French director , playwright and theater director . He also worked as a translator and set designer .

Live and act

André Barsacq was born near the Crimea. After the early death of their father, the family moved to France. There he began training at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris to become an interior designer and set designer. Enthusiastic about the theater, he began his work in 1927 as a set and costume designer for Volpone by Jules Romains and Stefan Zweig after Ben Jonson in a production by Charles Dullin . The 18-year-old was successful and from then on worked for Antonin Artaud , Jean-Louis Barrault and Jean Hugo . He became known for his clear synthesis of decoration with text and context. In addition to his work for the theater, he was also the set designer for several films by Marcel L'Herbier , Max Ophüls and Jean Grémillon . His brother Léon Barsacq , who was three years older than him, also established himself as a film architect at the time.

In 1937 he founded with Jean Dasté the La Compagnie des Quatre Saisons and was even stage director. He directed contemporary authors and classics. He traveled to New York and Rio de Janeiro with his productions. His Parisian places of work as a director were the Théâtre de l'Atelier, the Comédie-Française and the Odéon. Eventually he became director of the Théâtre de l'Atelier. He brought many Russian authors to the Parisian stages and worked as a director from 1937 to 1972 with the actors Michel Bouquet , Philippe Noiret , Michel Piccoli , Charles Denner , Jean-Paul Belmondo , François Périer , Jean Rochefort , Laurent Terzieff , Claude Rich , Michael Lonsdale , Jean-Pierre Marielle , Niels Arestrup , Pierre Arditi , Pierre Vaneck and Jacques Perrin and the actresses Arletty , Delphine Seyrig , Brigitte Bardot , Jeanne Moreau , Maria Casarès , Edwige Feuillère , Marina Vlady , Claude Jade , Danièle Delorme and Emmanuelle Riva .

Legendary remains u. a. his world premiere of Marcel Aymé's Die Mondvögel . He is the director of around 80 plays and has also directed a dozen of them as television films.

He died preparing for One Long Day's Journey Into the Night with Georges Wilson .

His daughter was the French actress Elisabeth Alain (1937–1974), known from the series Le 16 à Kerbriant .
