Andrew Sullivan (born February 12, 1980 in Euston , Greater London ) is a British basketball player . After studying in the United States , Sullivan played as a professional at various clubs in Europe. In his home country he won a total of three championships in the British Basketball League (BBL) with his respective clubs. With the British national team he took part in the European Championship finals in 2009 and 2011 as well as in the 2012 Olympic Games in his hometown of London.

Career

Sullivan went to the United States in 1996 to the St. Augustine College Preparatory School in Richland, New Jersey and after graduating from high school , he enrolled in 1999 at Villanova University on the outskirts of Philadelphia . After a promising career in high school , where he was named "South Jersey Player of the Year" in his senior year, he did not get a chance on the college team Wildcats in the Big East Conference of the NCAA . In his second year as a sophomore he saw practically no playing time after he was also prevented by injuries. The Wildcats also stumbled after reaching the NCAA national finals six times in the 1990s . The former successful coach Steve Lappas was dismissed in 2001 and under his successor Jay Wright Sullivan also got more playing time again, without his personal statistics indicating a promising professional career.

After graduating in 2003, Sullivan signed a contract in the Dutch FEB league with the record champions EBBC in 's-Hertogenbosch . With this team, however, he could not celebrate any success in the 2003/04 season. For the 2004/05 season he returned to his home country and joined the Eagles from Newcastle upon Tyne . After you won the BBL Trophy, an independent competition of the BBL with regional group games in the preliminary round, you also won the play-offs for the championship of the league. In the following season 2005/06 they dominated the league and won in addition to the BBL Cup, the BBL Trophy and the championship again, after this time the regular season had ended as first in the table. Sullivan has been named MVP for the BBL. After the 2012 Olympics were awarded to Sullivan's hometown London, the British national basketball team was reorganized, which had an automatic start right as host. Sullivan was also appointed to this new national team for the first time. After his success Sullivan had recommended himself for duties in higher European leagues and he left the British league afterwards.

For the 2006/07 season Sullivan got a contract with the Spanish FIBA EuroCup winner Joventut from Badalona , where his national team colleagues Andrew Betts and Robert Archibald already played. With this club he took part in the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2006/07 , where they were eliminated in the group stage of the 16 best teams. In the Spanish championship of the ACB League , they were eliminated in the semi-final series in just under five games against eventual champions Real Madrid . For the following season, the British national coach Chris Finch brought him to Dexia Mons-Hainaut in Belgium , where he played with his national team- mates Nate Reinking , Roger Huggins and Michael Lenzly . Together they reached the final in the FIBA EuroCup, which was lost to the Latvian team Barons / LMT from Riga with just one point. Without a contract for the new season, Sullivan initially returned to the Newcastle Eagles in the BBL.

A few weeks after the start of the 2008 season, Sullivan moved to the Russian club ZSK WWS in Samara . In the group stage of the 16 best teams in the EuroChallenge , as the FIBA EuroCup has been called since this season, they faced Sullivan's former club Dexia Mons-Hainaut, but remained without a win in all six group games of the second round. After Sullivan had played successfully with the British national team in Division A of the best European national teams, the first qualification for the European title fights in Poland succeeded. In the first round, however, they lost all three group games against the later semi-finalists Slovenia , Spain and Serbia . In the following season 2009/10 Sullivan then moved to Limassol in Cyprus , but not to the previous EuroChallenge Final Four host AEL , but to local rival Apollon. After two months he left the club and returned in January 2010 to the Newcastle Eagles, who won the main round of the BBL and the BBL Trophy, but lost in the semi-final play-offs against eventual champions Everton Tigers. The Tigers under coach Tony Garbelotto called themselves from the following season Mersey Tigers and signed Sullivan. They won the main round as well as the BBL Trophy and the play-offs of the BBL, only a clear final defeat in the BBL Cup against runner-up Sheffield Sharks prevented the Tigers from total triumph.

In 2011, a British national team participated for the second time in title fights for the European Championship. At the 2011 European Championship finals , they were eliminated again in the first round after two wins in five games. After disputes over payment methods, Sullivan left the Mersey Tigers at the beginning of the 2011/12 season and switched to league rivals Riders from Leicester . His former club Newcastle Eagles dominated the league and won both the play-off final and the semi-finals of the BBL Trophy against the Riders. After the end of the season, Sullivan was able to lead the British national team as team captain at the 2012 Olympic tournament in his hometown, where they were also eliminated in the first round after winning five group games.
