Robert Michael Archibald (born March 29, 1980 in Paisley , Scotland , † January 23, 2020 in Illinois , United States ) was a British basketball player . After studying in the United States, Archibald was active for two seasons in the highest endowed US professional league, the NBA, for various clubs without being able to assert himself with these. He then played from 2004 to 2012 with two one-year breaks in Italy and the Ukraine for clubs in the Spanish ACB league . After participating in the 2012 Olympic Games with the British national team , the native Scot ended his active career. Robert Archibald, 39, was found dead in his home on January 23, 2020.

Career

Archibald's father Robert sr. was also basketball player in his youth played basketball for the club Reign in Dunfermline , where he first went to school. In 1997, at the age of 17, he moved to Lafayette High School in Wildwood, Missouri , where he graduated after a year and went to study at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . There, the tall Scot was active in the college team Fightinglassung in basketball in the Big Ten Conference of the NCAA . In the championship tournament they reached the final in 1999 and 2000, in the following two seasons 2001 and 2002 they shared the championship of the "regular season", but did not get very far in the tournament. Except for Archibald's first year 1999 they were each qualified for the national NCAA finals , in which 2001 and 2002 each reached the second round Sweet Sixteen . In 2001 they won the second round as the top seeded team in the "Midwest Regional" against the Jayhawks of the University of Kansas and moved into the Regional Final Elite Eight , which was lost to the eventual runner-up, the Wildcats of the University of Arizona .

Club career

In the entry draft of the professional league NBA , Archibald was selected in 2002 in 32nd place by the Memphis Grizzlies. In the NBA 2002/03 , however, Archibald only came to twelve short appearances with an average of six minutes. Before the beginning of the following NBA 2003/04 season , he came in a player swap to the Phoenix Suns , who used him in one game, before he was swapped for the Orlando Magic after Christmas 2003 , who used him in another game before he started January was traded to the Toronto Raptors. Here he was used relatively regularly in 30 games, but his average playing time and effectiveness he could hardly increase here. At the end of the season, his NBA career was over.

In 2004 Archibald got a contract from the Spanish club Pamesa from Valencia in the ACB league . After seven missions, he moved to the Italian club Scavolini from Pesaro in the Lega Basket Serie A at the end of November . For economic reasons, the license for another season was withdrawn from the ninth placed in the final table at the end of the season. For the following 2005/06 season Archibald then moved back to Spain and played for DKV Joventut from Badalona . The team won the FIBA EuroCup 2005/06 at the end of the season , but lost the semi-final series in the national championship play-offs in just under five games against the main round first and eventual champions Unicaja Málaga. This was repeated in the following 2006/07 season, when they were eliminated again in five games against eventual champions Real Madrid in the semifinals series. Internationally one reached in the highest European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2006/07 the round of the 16 best teams, where one could achieve however only one victory in six games.

For the 2007/08 season Archibald moved to the Ukraine to Azovmash from Mariupol . In terms of sport, they were successful and Archibald won the national double of championship and cup with the finalist of the FIBA EuroCup 2006/07 . Archibald, however, was dissatisfied with the living conditions and medical care in the Ukraine after both his wife and himself contracted appendicitis , which is why Archibald returned to the Spanish league after one season. He then played three seasons for Unicaja from Málaga , where they were eliminated twice in the semi-finals for the national championship. In the 2010/11 season they were eliminated in the first round against eventual champions FC Barcelona . In the ULEB Euroleague, the club ended in the round of the 16 best teams. For the 2011/12 season, he moved to league rivals CAI from Saragossa , but they again missed the play-offs for the championship.

National team

Archibald initially played for the Scottish national team, which only took part in tournaments for teams from smaller countries of FIBA Europe . After the 2012 Olympic Games were awarded in the British capital, London , a joint national team for Great Britain was formed from the previously independent associations of England , Scotland and Wales , to which Archibald also belonged. With this team he then also qualified for the European Championship finals in 2009 and 2011 . In the finals, however, you were eliminated after the tournament preliminary round. As a host you were then qualified for the 2012 Olympic basketball tournament. But even here they were eliminated after the preliminary round, when after four defeats they only clearly won the final preliminary round game against China . After the Olympic tournament Archibald ended his active career as a basketball player.
