Nathan "Nate" Reinking (born December 12, 1973 in Upper Sandusky , Ohio ) is a former basketball player , a native of the United States . After graduation, he played in the British Basketball League and acquired by marrying a Englishwoman , the British citizenship . For his new home country he then played as a national player .

His playing career is closely linked to that of the British national coach Chris Finch , who coached him at club level with the Sharks from Sheffield and with the Belgian clubs Euphony Bree and Dexia Mons-Hainaut.

At the end of his career, his goal was to take part in the 2012 Olympic Games in London with the British national team , which is why he extended his active career to the age of almost 39.

Career

College in Ohio (1992 to 1996)

Reinking went to Kent State University to study in his home state in 1992 , where he was active for the college team Golden Flashes . The Golden Flashes had no success in basketball and only achieved negative results under coach Dave Grube from 1992 to 1996, while his predecessor had at least received invitations to the NIT . Only in the following decade did the successors of pit championships get in the Mid-American Conference of the NCAA and multiple participations in the national final of the NCAA .

British Basketball League (1996 to 2005)

Despite a less promising college career, Reinking tried his hand at a professional and got a contract in the British Basketball League in 1996 in a country that has little tradition in basketball and had no success in Europe. After two seasons with the Riders from Leicester , in which they reached the Cup final of the British League in 1998, he played in the 1998/99 season with the "Storm" from Derby . For the following season coach Chris Finch brought him to Sheffield to the Sharks .

In the first season 1999/2000 they won the British League Cup. In the championship they reached from 2000 to 2003 in each case first or second place in the Northern Conference of the British league, but only moved into the final series of the play-offs in 2001 and 2002 . There it was only enough to runner-up after losing to Reinkings Ex-Club Leicester Riders and the Cheshire Jets .

After taking first place in the regular season in 2003, but already eliminated in the semi-finals of the play-offs, Finch left the club and moved to the Gießen 46ers in the German basketball league . Under Finch's successor, the Sharks managed to win their first championship with Reinking after a second place in the 2004 regular season.

The following season failed to defend their title when they were eliminated in the semifinals, and Reinking succeeded his former coach Chris Finch, who had meanwhile become coach in Bree , Belgium .

Belgian League (2005 to 2010)

Finch had become Belgian champion with Euphony Bree in 2005 and brought Reinking into his team alongside Julius Jenkins . In the following season, however, you could not defend the title. After another finals in 2007, which was lost to the Flemish competitor Telindus Oostende , Finch left the club and moved to Mons in Wallonia's Hainaut . Finch took his long-time player Reinking to his new club. Reinking had become a British citizen after marrying an Englishwoman and had already played four games for the English national team.

After the 2012 Olympic Games were awarded in the British capital, London , the British national team, which had secured the right to start as hosts, and Finch national coach were reorganized. At Dexia Mons-Hainaut, Finch brought together Reinking with Mike Lenzly and Andrew Sullivan in his club squad in the 2007/08 season .

At the European club level, they were very successful in the EuroChallenge 2008 when they reached the finals and only narrowly lost with one point against the Latvian club Barons / LMT from Riga . Reinking was the top scorer of his team in this game with 13 points , although he only had a shortened playing time of 23 minutes after five fouls.

End of career in the British league (2010 to 2012)

Reinking returned to the British League in 2010 after deciding to continue his career in the face of the upcoming Olympics. He signed a contract with the master Tigers from Everton , which had been renamed "Mersey Tigers". Together with Andrew Sullivan under coach Tony Garbelotto they could defend the championship and win the BBL Trophy for the first time.

For the 2011/12 season Reinking returned to his former club Sharks in Sheffield. In the 2012 play-offs, they were eliminated in the first round. Then, at the age of 38, Reinking was able to realize his dream of participating in the Olympics. After four defeats in the beginning, however, it was only enough to win a clear preliminary round over China , which was not enough to qualify for the quarter-finals.
