Anesthetic is the first solo album of American Metal - guitarist Mark Morton . The album was released on March 1, 2019 via Spinefarm Records .

Emergence

Mark Morton is actually the guitarist of the metal band Lamb of God . He wrote a lot of music over the years that was unsuitable for his main band for various reasons. For a long time Morton wondered whether he should offer his music to other bands. It was more or less by chance that Morton played the demos to producer Josh Wilbur. He liked the music and advised Morton to tackle a solo album. At the same time, Wilbur offered himself as a producer. Morton then made a list of possible singers that he would like to have on his album. He took the Probot album by Dave Grohl as a model. All of the preferred candidates agreed, according to Morton.

All the songs were re-recorded, initially with Morton's singing as a guide. In addition, Morton wrote the majority of the lyrics himself. About three quarters of the texts were influenced by personal experiences. Other texts deal with the subject of rebirth in the sense of starting anew and discarding negative legacies. The lyrics of The Truth Is Dead are political in nature. Only Myles Kennedy and Josh Todd received instrumental versions of the songs and wrote their own lyrics. The guest singers then recorded their parts, partly with Morton in the same studio, partly in other studios. Morton sings himself on the song Imaginary Days .

In April 2017, Mark Morton posted a photo of him with Chester Bennington ( Linkin Park ) in the studio on Twitter , stating that they were both collaborating on a new project. Bennington confirmed the collaboration a short time later on Instagram and published excerpts from the text by Cross Off . He also revealed that Josh Wilbur is also involved. Three months later, Chester Bennington committed suicide . For this reason, Morton had to obtain the consent of some people close to Bennington before publication.

Was produced Anesthetic by Josh Wilbur. Mark Morton played all of the guitars himself. On the song Cross Off , Paolo Gregoletto and Alex Bent from the band Trivium play bass and drums respectively . The album also features bassists David Ellefson ( Megadeth ) and Mike Inez ( Alice in Chains ) as well as drummers Roy Mayorga ( Stone Sour ), Ray Luzier ( Korn ), Jean-Paul Guster ( Clutch ) and Steve Gorman ( The Black Crowes ). With the album title Mark Morton wants to express that music is his refuge from problems, depression or conflicts.

“Music is my pain reliever. She has a big part in my life and is very important to me. When I'm sad, pissed off or happy, I can grab my guitar and forget about everything else. "

- Mark Morton

Musically, the album includes different styles. In addition to the Thrash or Groove Metal typical of Lamb of God , other songs come from the genres of hard rock , alternative rock , punk rock and soul . For the song Cross off one was music video releases.

reception

Matthias Weckmann from the German magazine Metal Hammer described the album as a “wild ride with a puzzle character , superbly produced and musically convincing despite all the stylistic conflict ”. If Morton had "wanted to show other influences with a solo album, he would definitely have achieved his goal". Chester Bennington would show in his contribution that he "could have shone in a more extreme style without any problems". Weckmann awarded five out of seven points. Ronny Bittner of the German magazine Rock Hard wrote that Mark Morton's solo album "gives an impression that the riffs of his main band Lamb of God and the radio-compatible rock format are not that far apart". The tracks, which are more reminiscent of Lamb of God, such as The Truth Is Dead or The Never would “not set any noteworthy new accents”, but “the stylistic outbursts would be more interesting and original”. Bittner awarded eight out of ten points.

The single Cross Off reached number 18 on the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales Chart . According to Nielsen Music , 2,000 downloads have been sold and 209,000 have been streamed in the United States .
