Anton Marte (born January 31, 1874 as Anton Marti in Schnifis ; † July 9, 1929 there ) was an Austrian church painter and restorer . In addition, he was mayor of his home community Schnifis from 1919 to 1924.

Life

Anton Marte was the son of Christian Marti and Ursula, geb. Konrad. He took the spelling Marte during his school days on the advice of a teacher.

At the age of 15 he came into contact with the church painter Johann Kärle , who was painting the church in the neighboring town of Satteins at the time , and decided to start an apprenticeship with him. After his apprenticeship and a year as a journeyman with Florus Scheel , he completed his training in 1898 and 1899 with a year and a half at the Innsbruck School of Applied Arts .

In 1899 he married Veronika Berchtel from Schnifis. The marriage produced a daughter.

From 1900 to 1904 he worked as a church decorator in Tyrol . However, the death of his only brother Lorenz in 1903 prompted him to return to Schnifis in 1904 and take over his father's property, from which time he mainly worked in Vorarlberg .

During the First World War , he worked in a war chancellery in Bruneck , where he fell ill with severe rheumatoid arthritis due to the adverse working conditions, which resulted in a year and a half of incapacity for work. A paralysis of the left arm resulting from this disease could never be completely eliminated. He was only able to resume work in 1920.

In 1919, Anton Marte, characterized by his contemporaries as educated and sociable, was elected mayor of his home town of Schnifis. He held the office until 1924.

A "cold" he got at the song festival in Bludenz in 1929 worsened so much because of his work in the new Capuchin Church in Landeck that he died on July 9th after a "four-week sickness".
