The church building is a listed building ( list entry ). and belongs to the parish Oberdorf in the dean's office Dornbirn , which belongs to the diocese of Feldkirch . The patronage of St. Sebastian is celebrated annually on January 20th.

history

As a previous building, the brothers Hanns and Jakob von Ems had a chapel built in 1467, which was erected in 1468 in honor of St. Sebastian was consecrated. This stood near today's parish church and the Oberdorf tower. This chapel was looked after by a Hohenems court chaplain from 1471 to 1771 , with the chaplaincy being donated in 1471.

Parishly, the upper village then belonged to the parish church of St. Martin and in 1785 became a branch . Today's parish church in Oberdorf was built in 1826/27, consecrated by Bernhard Galura on October 28, 1828 , and replaced the previous small chapel.

The wood-shingled dome of the church tower was first covered with sheet iron in 1870, and then with copper sheet in 1925. In 1888 the upper village became an independent parish. In 1875 the interior was renovated for the first time, followed by another in 1897/98. In 1914/15 the church was extended by 10 m towards the west and renovated and expanded again in 1927/28. The new ceiling paintings, which are still visible today, were also created. In 1952 a two-story sacristy was built and in 1966 the pulpit was removed, new windows were installed and the tower and the outer facade were repaired. From 2011 to 2013 the church was again extensively renovated.

location

The church forms part of the center of the upper village. The traffic-calmed Oberdorferstrasse runs directly past the north-eastern side of the church, and Kirchgasse on the south-eastern and partly southern side (chancel).

architecture

The church in Balgach in the Swiss Rhine Valley was the inspiration for the planning of the new building in 1826/27 . The choir ( chancel ) is separated from the nave (nave) by a choir arch. The church is oriented to the northwest-southeast. The church building is about 20 m high, about 44 m long, 17 m wide.

The floor in the interior is made of Krastal marble , the floor in the nave is a little lighter than in the chancel. The nave is illuminated through semi-arched windows. There is a statue of St. Nepomuk in the east facade . Above the main portal (west side) is the statue of a bishop whose identification is still pending.

Furnishing

The interior of the church has been redesigned several times over the decades. The originally lavish neo-baroque wall decorations were reduced further and further.

The altars made of black stucco marble with columns and pilasters around 1826 were made by Kaspar Meusburger. The picture on the high altar , crucifixion of Christ with Maria and Johannes, from 1830 by Gebhard Flatz from Wolfurt - Rickenbach . The upper picture shows St. Sebastian . To the left and right of the main altar are two statues from around the second half of the 18th century, those of St. Rochus and St. Jodok (right).

The left side altar shows the Annunciation in the main picture and St. Francis Xavier in the upper picture . The right side altar shows the adoration of the kings in the main picture and St. Nepomuk in the upper picture . These pictures were created by Alois Keller .

The stations of the cross and most of the statues, made around 1900 and installed in 1902, come from the Mayer'schen Königlichen Hof-Kunstanstalt in Munich .

The central stylistic element after the renovation are sea-green glass bodies, some with top elements made of oiled smoked oak . Folk altar and ambo made of Krastaler marble by Herbert Albrecht from 1978 received a resolution made of sea-green glass chunks on the occasion of the renovation in 2012. Since the renovation, the altar and ambo can be used in both directions, as the choir is now also used for celebrations with few participants. The simply held pews from 1958 made of oiled pine.

Of the original 12 apostles pictures that Alois Keller from Pfronten have been created are in the vault eight Zwickel received. The original ceiling paintings by Alois Keller were painted over and replaced by four new ceiling paintings in 1928 by Hans Purin . The ceiling painting in the chancel depicts the giving of communion in the catacombs with St. Tarcisius . In the ceiling paintings in the nave of St. Lawrence and the poor, in the middle of St. Sebastian before Emperor Diocletian and the martyrdom of St. Agnes . Above the gallery there is a ceiling painting with St. Cecilia playing the organ.

organ

The first organ was installed in 1841 and restored in 1874. This organ came from the parish church of St. Martin. In 1890 a new organ was donated by Viktor Hämmerle (organ building company Gebrüder Mayer ), expanded in 1993 (now 1377 organ pipes ). The organ was extensively renovated and cleaned in 2013. Today the organ has three manuals and pedal , 21 registers and four couplers .

Bells

Since 1904 there have been eight bells in the tower , two of which were from the 15th century. Seven of them had to be delivered for war purposes in 1916 and 1917. The four new bells purchased in 1921 ( Grassmayr bell foundry ) also had to be returned in 1942. Only a small bell from 1464 has survived to this day. Since July 17, 1949, the tower has been ringing with 5 bronze bells. The bells were cast in 1949 by the Oberascher (Georg Sippel) bell foundry from Salzburg for this parish church.
