Max Bernhard Anton von Behr (born September 7, 1849 in Dönhofstädt , Rastenburg district , East Prussia , † March 8, 1931 in Naumburg ) was a German architect , Prussian construction officer , monument conservator and architecture writer.

Life

origin

Anton von Behr was a son of Heinrich Dietrich Otto Ferdinand von Behr († 1880 in Schnellwalde ) from Peterwitz in West Prussia . After attending the Altstädtisches Gymnasium in Königsberg (matriculation examination 1834) and a subsequent study of theology, the father was pastor of the Evangelical Reformed parish of Dönhoffstädt from 1845 to 1856 and most recently superintendent of the diocese of Mohrungen .

Career

After attending a secondary school and completing the Bau-Eleven year, which was still mandatory at that time, Anton von Behr studied at the Berlin Bauakademie . After passing the First State Examination , he joined the Prussian Ministry of Public Works in 1874 when he was appointed Royal Government Building Supervisor .

After several years as a government building supervisor ( trainee lawyer ), Anton von Behr passed the second state examination (master builder examination) in February 1881 with subsequent appointment as Royal Prussian government master builder ( assessor ). At the suggestion of the Royal Technical Higher Examination Commission, the Minister of Public Works, Anton von Behr, granted in July 1881, in recognition of his talents presented during the examination, a scholarship of 1,800 marks to perfect his knowledge on study trips. This led him to Italy in 1882, where he studied in particular the work of the Renaissance master builder Baldassare Peruzzi , the “ Rafael among architects”. After his return, von Behr was assigned the first major construction task, in the transfer of special construction management over the government building in Wroclaw and subsequently in the same position in the renovation and expansion of the government in Hildesheim.

The region around Hildesheim and Goslar determined his further work until 1901. After he had already temporarily fulfilled this office in the current year, von Behr was employed as a district building inspector in Goslar at the end of 1890. There he was responsible for the design and execution of numerous smaller buildings, including workers' houses, stables and barns on domains, foresters and schoolhouses. His work in the context of the restoration work on the imperial palace in Goslar should be emphasized from this time . Anton von Behr had nevertheless proven himself for larger tasks, from which, after his promotion to government and building councilor on October 1, 1901, he was transferred to the royal government in Coblenz as head of building construction .

As head of building construction in Koblenz, von Behr was responsible for all technical matters, with the exclusion of construction matters for elementary school administration, forest and domain administration, justice and prison administration. His business area included in particular the maintenance and protection of antiquities and the preservation of monuments (including the state castles in Koblenz and Stolzenfels ). But already in March 1904 a possible renewed transfer of Behrs was discussed; on July 1, 1904, it was implemented in the same position as the Royal Government in Trier .

Von Behr took up his last position in June 1912. Until his retirement on October 1, 1919, he still worked as a building construction department at the royal government in Köslin . Due to the war, construction activity was limited during these years.

After his retirement, Anton von Behr quietly retired to Naumburg an der Saale as a secret building officer. He was married and had four children, including the art historian and government building supervisor Heinrich (Heinz) von Behr, who in 1909 graduated from the Technical University in Berlin with the work Die Porta Nigra in Trier as Dr. Ing. PhD. Heinz von Behr was hired as a research assistant at the commission for monument statistics under Paul Clemen in 1910 and was involved with the preparatory work for the inventory of art monuments for the Eifel district Schleiden . After his illness in 1914, his father revised and added to the texts he had written up until then. Anton von Behr's drawings and measurements were also included in the inventories.
