Árborg ( Isl. Sveitarfélagið Árborg "municipality Árborg") is a municipality in the Icelandic region of South Urland . Important places are Selfoss , Eyrarbakki and Stokkseyri . On January 1, 2019, Árborg had 9,486 inhabitants. The municipality has the status of an independent city.
geography
The municipality is located in the south of Iceland, east of Hellisheiði , south of lake Þingvallavatn and west of Hvolsvöllur . In the south it borders on the North Atlantic , where the small port towns of Eyrarbakki and Stokkseyri are located.
The Ölfusá flows through the municipality , about 3 km from Selfoss is the Ingólfsfjall tabular volcano .
history
The municipality was created on June 7, 1998 from the merger of the previously independent rural communities Eyrarbakki ( Eyrarbakkahreppur ), Sandvík ( Sandvíkurhreppur ) and Stokkseyri ( Stokkseyrarhreppur ) with the city of Selfoss ( Selfosskaupstaður ).
Selfoss
Selfoss with 8068 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) is an important trading center in the region.
Stokkseyri
Stokkseyri is a fishing port on the south coast of Iceland not far from Selfoss and had 455 inhabitants on January 1, 2011. The place is south of the fishing village Eyrarbakki and west of Selfoss.
history
The area has been inhabited since the time of the conquest . In the past people lived here from fishing and agriculture, whereas today the majority of the inhabitants commute to Selfoss or Reykjavík.
Economy and Services
There is a comprehensive school, church, library and swimming pool in the village. There is an elf and troll museum there, as well as a restaurant serving lobster crab and lamb.
Leisure and Tourism
Numerous summer houses are located in the village or in its vicinity. The area and the beach are ideal for hiking, horse riding and kayaking trips.
Eyrarbakki
Eyrarbakki with 540 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) is a fishing and harbor town.
Population development
Between 1997 and 2008, Árborg had an unusually large population increase (+ 33%) due to its proximity to the capital Reykjavík and a corresponding economic boom.
