Arise is a Swedish death and thrash metal band from Alingsås that was formed in 1996.

history

The band was founded in 1996 by drummer Daniel Bugno and bassist Patrik Skoglöw and was initially still a cover band. The band was named after the Sepultura album of the same name . A short time later the guitarists Erik Ljungkvist and LG Jonasson and the singer Björn Andvik joined them. The band wrote their first songs for a year before Andvik left the band, after which Ljungjvist also took over the vocals. In 1998 and 1999 the band recorded their first two demos. In April 2000, the group went to Los Angered Studios with producer Andy LaRocque ( Death , King Diamond ) to record their first professional demo under the name Abducted Intelligence . Later that year, the band secured a recording deal with Spinefarm Records for the release of three albums. In the same year, the band contributed the song Communication Breakdown to the Led Zeppelin Tribute album by Dwell Records , which contained death metal covers.

The debut album The Godly Work of Art was recorded in May 2001 in Studio Mega under the direction of Christian "Bullen" Silver ( Cemetary ), while the cover was designed by Niklas Sundin of Dark Tranquility. The sound carrier was released in September / October of the same year. In September the band played at the Spine Fest hosted by Spinefarm Records. Spinefarm Records also negotiated with Nuclear Blast for a release in Europe and Toy's Factory in Japan , but that came to nothing. The album should still appear in Japan, this version of the song Motorbreath included as a bonus, a cover of Metallica -Liedes. In September 2002, the group returned to Studio Mega to record the second album Kings of the Cloned Generation , with the cover again being designed by Sundin. The sound carrier was released during a European tour together with Vader , Deranged and Arkhon Infaustus in April and May 2003. Back in Sweden, the group came into contact with the booking agency Skrikhult. The band performed at their festival Gates of Metal, which also included Morbid Angel , Meshuggah , Sentenced , Finntroll and Within Temptation . She also went to Helsinki to perform again at the Spine Fest, which was held at Club Nosturi . In September 2004 the next album The Beautiful New World was recorded in Studio Mega within three weeks . The cover was not designed by Sundin this time, as he was too involved in dark tranquility. The publication followed several concerts, including three appearances as support act for Morbid Angel in Sweden. However, Arise no longer felt sufficiently supported by Spinefarm Records, which is why she separated from the label. On December 15, 2005, the group also separated from bassist Skoglöw and guitarist and singer Ljungkvist. On December 18th, the band held their first rehearsal with a new line-up, with Patrik “Patzy” Johansson as the new singer, Mattias “Sternberg” Svanborg as the new guitarist and Kaj “Kai” Leissner as the new bassist. On February 13, 2006 the band played their first appearance in Falkenberg with a new line-up. In 2010 the album The Reckoning was released via Regain Records , which contains guest contributions by Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquility), Jake Fredén ( Nostradameus ) and Jonas Kjellgren ( Carnal Forge , Scar Symmetry ).

style

According to the band biography on ariseonline.com , the band was initially influenced by groups like Sepultura Machine Head and Pantera . Later, bands like Dark Tranquility, Hypocrisy , Carcass , At the Gates and In Flames were added as influences. According to Janne Stark in The Heaviest Encyclopedia of Swedish Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Ever! the band has evolved from a band that mainly covered Sepultura songs into a death and thrash metal band that is often compared to At the Gates. According to Petra Schurer from Metal Hammer , the band plays classic death metal on The Godly Work of Art , with melodies that are typical for Gothenburg bands. Schurer was reminded of bands like Carcass and At the Gates. In addition, there are occasional doom metal -Passagen and songs like A Godly Work of Art would black metal have conditions influencing the fate. The song Abducted Intelligence shows a mixture of American and Scandinavian Death Metal. According to Gunnar Sauermann, the band doesn't sound like typical Swedish bands from Gothenburg. Drummer Daniel Bugno named At the Gates as the main influence, but try not to fixate on the melody as much as Dark Tranquility or In Flames. In addition, the members also like tough American death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse or Morbid Angel, which one can hardly listen to the songs. Lyrically, the band is heavily influenced by the Alien films or the art of HR Giger . In his review of The Beautiful New World, Jan Fleckhaus from Metal Hammer heard Death Metal riffs that could also have come from the Björler brothers (At the Gates, The Haunted ), while the songs have classic Thrash Metal influences would. The vocals are very reminiscent of Tomas Lindberg's . According to Matthias Weckmann from Metal Hammer , The Reckoning has “short [n] Thrashers ('Adrenaline Rush') […] more epic structures ('End Of Days') […] an instrumental ('Pitch Black') and numerous melody fragments reminiscent of At The Gates and Carcass ”. In his review of the album, Weckmann described the style as Thrash Metal with strong Death Metal influences and again made a comparison with At the Gates and Carcass.
