Armando Trovajoli (also " Trovaioli "; born September 2, 1917 in Rome ; † March 1, 2013 ibid) was an Italian pianist and film composer . He has worked as a composer and / or musical director for over 200 films, including many jazz instrumentations for films by the Commedia all'italiana . He worked with Vittorio De Sica on a number of projects including his part of Boccaccio '70 . He is also the author of a number of well-known Italian musicals from the past fifty years, such as Rugantino and Aggiungi un posto a tavola . Trovajoli was the husband of actress Pier Angeli .

Life

His musical talent was already evident as a child. He was introduced to music by his father (violinist). This was followed by piano and composition training at the Music Conservatory in St. Cecilia in Rome. In 1937 he was hired as a classical pianist for the Rocco Grasso Orchestra. In 1939 he played with the Sesto Carlini Orchestra , one of the leading Italian formations of jazz music. After the war he perfected his playing and graduated from the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia , one of the most renowned Italian music academies, in Rome in 1948.

In 1949 he was selected to represent Italy at the Festival du Jazz de Paris . Here he played together with Gorni Kramer (double bass) and Gilberto Cuppini (drums). The following year he began to record a series of records (published under the title Musica per i vostri sogni = music for your dreams ). The recording of Eclipse , which was made in collaboration with Piero Morgan (= Piero Piccioni ), should bring the Italians closer to jazz piano combined with a string orchestra.

In the meantime Trovajoli had started to work under the pseudonym Vatro as the author of songs like È l'alba (= It is the twilight ) or Dimmi un po 'Sinatra (= Tell me a little Sinatra ). In 1952 he was hired by Alberto Lattuada to write the music for Anna's soundtrack . Among them was the world hit El Negro Zumbon . In the same year Trovajoli played a concert to the music of Gershwin under the direction of Artur Rodzinsky in the theater in San Carlo in Naples and under Willy Ferrero in the Maxentius basilica in Rome. In 1953 he wrote the music for the film Due notti con Cleopatra - (Two nights with Cleopatra) .

In 1962, he composed the music for the musical comedy Rugantino of G & G . Pietro Garinei and Sandro Giovannini were the two great impessaries of Italian show business from 1958. From 1952 to 1978 they produced the pieces they wrote together.

He also had success with Ciao Rudy and Aggiungi un posto a tavola , which Iaia Fiastri wrote and was premiered in Turin in 1975. The often heard song Rugantino, Roma, nun fa 'la stupida stasera also received worldwide attention. He is making a name for himself as a composer of film music and has often worked with the directors Vittorio De Sica , Marco Vicario , Dino Risi , Mario Monicelli , Luigi Magni and Ettore Scola . He conducted the orchestras for jazz and light music on Italian radio and television.

In Germany, Aggiungi un posto a tavola in 1977 at the Theater des Westens Berlin was freely based on After me the delunge by David Forrest, translated by Peter Turrini, rewritten by Karl Vibach under the title Himmel, Arche und Wolkenbruch , lyrics with the music of Trovajoli by Peter Orthofer translated into German, and the work premiered with Freddy Quinn as Don Silvestro and Silvia Anders as Angelina.

In 1962 he married the actress Pier Angeli. With this he has a son, Andrea Howard . The marriage ended in divorce in 1968. His second marriage was Mariapaola , the mother of his second son Georg .
