Hans Otto Arthur von der Groeben (born November 10, 1850 in Breslau ; † December 14, 1930 ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

origin

Arthur was a son of Waterloo von der Groeben (1816-1884) and his first wife Hulda, born Freiin von Zedlitz and Neukirch (1828-1851). His father was a Prussian major a. D. , Commander of the Invalidenhaus in Stolp and legal knight of the Order of St. John .

Military career

Groeben joined the 2nd Lower Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 47 of the Prussian Army on March 25, 1869 , advanced to Second Lieutenant during his participation in the war against France in mid-September 1870 and was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class for his behavior . For further training he graduated from the War Academy in 1875/78 , subsequently rose to Prime Lieutenant and was commanded to serve with the Great General Staff in 1882/84 . In mid-April 1884 he was transferred to the 1st Magdeburg Infantry Regiment No. 26 . A year later, Groeben was promoted to captain and company commander . In position à la suite of his regiment, he was transferred to the secondary budget of the Great General Staff on December 13, 1887 and briefly assigned to the staff of the 4th Division in mid-January 1890 . This was followed at the end of March by the transfer to the General Staff of the 35th Division and in May 1890 the promotion to major. From September 1891 to June 1896 Groeben was again active in the Great General Staff. He was then commissioned to take on the business as chief of the general staff of the IV Army Corps and in mid-July 1896 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel as chief of this staff. After his promotion to colonel , he returned to the troop service and acted from August 16, 1899 to November 19, 1900 as commander of the grenadier regiment "Kronprinz" (1st East Prussian) No. 1 . Then Groeben was commanded to serve with the Great General Staff and on December 29, 1900, was appointed head of the railway department in the Great General Staff. In this capacity he received the rank and fees of brigade commander in mid-November 1901 and rose to major general in mid-June 1902 . From April 18, 1903 to March 19, 1906, Groeben was in command of the 33rd Infantry Brigade in Altona and then, as Lieutenant General , he was in command of the 12th Division in Neisse . In approval of his leave request , he was on March 3, 1910 Presentation of the character as General of Infantry with the statutory board for disposition made.

In recognition of his many years of service, Groeben received approval to wear the uniform of the Grenadier Regiment "Kronprinz" (1st East Prussian) No. 1 on January 27, 1914.

During the First World War , Groeben was reused as a zD officer and served as a stage inspector of the 7th Army . In this position he received the swords for the Order of the Crown, First Class, in July 1915 .

family

Groeben married Margarete Weickmann (* 1856) on October 16, 1879 in Hamburg . The son Kurt (* 1880) emerged from the marriage.
