Ashland is a town (with the status " City ") and the administrative center of Ashland County in the US -amerikanischen State Wisconsin . A small part of the urban area extends into Bayfield County . In 2010 Ashland had 8,216 inhabitants, making it the largest city in both counties.

Ashland is located at 46 ° 35 'north latitude and 90 ° 52' west longitude and extends over 35.4 km² at an altitude of 213 meters above sea level. The city is located on Lake Superior in Chequamegon Bay .

US Highway 2 and Wisconsin Highways 13 , 112 and 137 run through the city in an east-west direction . The John F. Kennedy Memorial Airport is three miles south of the city.

The city was connected to the rail network of the Chicago and North Western Railway , the train service is offered by Canadian National .

The nearest larger cities are Duluth (approx. 110 km west), Wausau (approx. 250 km southeast), the Canadian Thunder Bay (approx. 260 km north as the crow flies on the other bank of Lake Superior) and the Twin Cities ( Minneapolis and Saint Paul ) in Minnesota (about 300 km southwest). Ashland is about 450 km north of Madison , the capital of the state.

Ashland has four distinct seasons with particularly cold winters. Because of the bank location on Lake Superior, the so-called lake effect snow occurs in the city with snow depths of 3–6 meters.

history

Around 1500 the Ojibwe settled the area and called it "Sha-ga-waun-il-ong". This expression is translated differently: lowland , area of ​​shallow water and where the particularly large surf is . Each of these translations is accurate and appropriate. The Ojibwe stayed in Chequamegon Bay for about 100 years.

The French fur traders Pierre d'Esprit, le Sieur Radisson and Medard Chouart, le Sieur des Groseillers were the first Europeans in Chequamegon Bay in 1659. The Ojibwe were hospitable to them. The French dwellings are now commonly referred to as the first European dwellings in Wisconsin.

The region has an eventful history with ten different Indian tribes, three different colonial powers and successive affiliations to the Northwest Territory , the Indiana Territory , Michigan Territory , Illinois Territory and Wisconsin Territory .

According to the 2010 census , Ashland had 8,216 people in 3,516 households. The population density was 236.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.17 people lived in each of the 3516 households.
