Attica is a town in Wyoming County in the state of New York in the United States . At the last census in 2010 , the Town of Attica had 7,702 inhabitants. The Attica Correctional Facility and the Wyoming Correctional Facility are located south of the town of Attica of the same name .
location
Attica is in northern Wyoming County and borders on Genesee County . The city of Batavia is about 17 kilometers as the crow flies and the city of Buffalo about 50 kilometers as the crow flies. In addition to the Village of Attica of the same name , the hamlets Attica Center and Vernal Corners also belong to the city. The Village of Attica is partially located in Genesee County, where it belongs to the city of Alexander . The Tonawanda Creek flows through the town.
The New York State Route 98 runs in a north-south direction through the city and intersects with the NY Routes 238 and 354 in the city center . US Highway 20 runs a few kilometers north of Attica . The Interstate 90 ( New York State Thruway ) is just 20 kilometers away from the city.
history
Attica was formed in 1811 from parts of the Town of Sheldon . Five years later, the city of Orangeville was founded again from part of Attica . In 1837 Attica was elevated to a "Town".

At the 2000 census , Attica had 6,028 inhabitants, spread across 1,497 households and 1,053 families. 72.79% of the population were white, 21.07% African American, 0.33% Asian, 0.33% Native American, 5.18% other races, and 0.3% belonged to two or more groups. Hispanics and Latinos made up 9.16% of the total population.
Of the 10,814 households, 33.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them and 56.5% were married couples. In 2000, 16.8% of the residents of the township were younger than 18 years, 10.8% were between 18 and 24, 44.2% between 25 and 44, 20.0% between 45 and 64 and 8.2% of the population Residents were older than 65 years. The median age was 35 years. The median income per household was $ 44,877. 6.3% of Attica's residents lived below the poverty line .
Attractions
In Attica, two buildings and two districts are listed and listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
- The Attica Market and Main Historic District includes 23 buildings in downtown Attica that were constructed between 1827 and 1915. The district was included in the NRHP on May 1, 2013. The Exchange Street Historic District was registered in the NRHP on November 21, 2012 and includes twelve buildings erected after the city fire of 1877.
- The Augustus A. Smith House is a house built in 1890 in the so-called Queen Anne style . It has been listed in the NRHP since June 27, 2007.
- The Attica Post Office building was constructed between 1936 and 1937 as a Works Progress Administration project and was designed by Louis A. Simon. The brick house is assigned to Colonial Revival architecture . The post office has been a listed building since November 17, 1988.
