Around 75% of all international passengers use it.
Expansion of the airport in 2008
A new pier for international flights went into operation in April 2008 and was officially opened by then Prime Minister Helen Clark in October, after Qantas landed a plane at Auckland Airport for the first time with an A380 test flight .
In order to be able to handle what is currently the largest passenger aircraft in the world, the A380, gate 15 and 16 were equipped with a so-called Multi Aircraft Ramp System (MARS), which can handle two A380s or four smaller aircraft at the same time. The airport company invested around NZ $ 50 million in the expansion.
The first three times a week scheduled flight with an A380 began on February 2, 2009 from Dubai via Sydney to Auckland and back and was set up by the airline Emirates .
With the planning of the expansion of the airport, the possibility was created, provided the passenger numbers continue to rise accordingly, to expand the airport by 10 more gates. At the same time, the expansion gave the airport a green image. Over 300 m 2 of solar cells it is now possible to generate 49,500 kWh of electricity and to produce over 40 m 3 of hot water. In addition, an energy management system was installed and u. A. A filter system installed, which ensures constantly clean and fresh air.
