Auenstein is a district of the municipality of Ilsfeld in the Heilbronn district in Baden-Württemberg .

geography

Auenstein lies two kilometers east of Ilsfeld in the triangle of the confluence of the Abstetter Bach coming from the east into the southwest flowing Schozach and close to the west bend following downstream the Schozach, after it has absorbed the Gruppenbach flowing from the north . The newer districts are eastward at the foot of the slope of the southern Löwenstein Mountains , higher up on the mountain wine is grown. Halfway up beyond the vineyards is the associated hamlet of Helfenberg , in the south the hamlet of Abstetterhof , which also belongs to Auenstein , both are around 2 km away. In the north-east lies the eponymous capital of the municipality Abstatt , the periphery of which touches that of Auenstein in the east.

history

Auenstein in Andreas Kieser's forest stock books (1686)

The place is first mentioned in 1245 as "Osthem". Over the centuries this name has changed from Osthem , Ousten , Ouenstein to today's Auenstein . Places with the final syllable -heim can usually be assigned to the early Franconian period, so that Ostheim is probably in the 6./7. Century was founded.

The local ensemble of names from Ostheim (2½ km east of Ilsfeld), Westheim (today Neckarwestheim - 4 km west of Ilsfeld) and Talheim (5 km down the valley in the north-west of Ilsfeld) suggests that these places were founded as preliminary works of the Ilsfeld royal court Back then it was the center of the Schozachgau . Osthem is mentioned for the first time in a document in 1240 in the time of the Hohenstaufen. After they built Helfenberg Castle in the 13th century , Auenstein was not subordinated to the Helfenberg Knight , but remained a free imperial village . In 1350 Auenstein came to Württemberg with Beilstein .

In 1935 the hamlet Abstetterhof , which originally belonged to Winzerhausen , came to Auenstein because it was more economically linked to Auenstein than to Winzerhausen. In 1939 there were 808 inhabitants, at the end of 1945 there were 886. After the Second World War , the community of Auenstein also experienced a rapid upswing with new residential and commercial areas. During the community reform, the communities Auenstein and Ilsfeld merged on December 31, 1973 to form the new community Ilsfeld. Today around 2000 people live in Auenstein.

Attractions

Evangelical St. James Church

The Protestant Church of St. James was built in 1832 in place of an older predecessor structure and has an organ with an ornate casing in the Rococo style . The gravestone of a Baron von Gaisberg from 1813 has been preserved on the church wall . The Auenstein town hall was built in 1766 by the innkeeper of the opposite Krone Gasthaus , the Schultheißen Kreh, and is also called Kepplersches Haus after another previous owner, the Schultheißen Keppler . The baroque building served as the town hall from 1952 until it merged with Ilsfeld in 1973, since then it has been the administrative center. An older town hall was located as an extension to a wine press building that was demolished in 1985 on the site of today's Volksbank, with two old heraldic stones embedded in the facade. The place also has several historical half-timbered buildings and an old bakery.

traffic

Auenstein is located directly on the highway 81 , exit Ilsfeld. Auenstein is connected to Ilsfeld, Abstatt and Beilstein by country roads.

From 1899 to 1968 Auenstein had a station on the Bottwartalbahn , the narrow-gauge line from Marbach am Neckar to Heilbronn Süd . The Royal Württemberg State Railways built the station building as a standard type IIa station. After the tracks have been dismantled, the route now largely serves the Alb-Neckar cycle path ( Eberbach - Ulm ).
