August Frind (born November 21, 1852 in Schönlinde ; † August 4, 1924 there ) was a German-Bohemian lithographer , writer , illustrator and painter .

The city of Krásná Lípa designed a themed trail “In the footsteps of August Frind” as part of the EU-funded program ERDF , on which 12 stations provide insights into his life and work.

Live and act

His parents were the weaver Augustin Frind and his wife Brigitte, geb. Hesse. The family lived in simple circumstances. The house where he was born is at Varnsdorfská No. 224/5. He attended secondary school and the trade school in Schönlinde and learned the profession of lithographer . From 1872–1874 he worked as a lithographer in Löbau and Dresden . At a young age he showed great interest in painting. A scholarship from the Schönlind textile manufacturer Carl August Dittrich (1819–1886) enabled him to study painting at the Dresden Art Academy from 1876 under the genre and portrait painter Leon Pohle and the history painter Ferdinand Pauwels . In 1881 Frind went on a study trip to southern Germany, Switzerland and Italy . In 1886 he finally finished his studies and went to Munich. At this time he painted his largest and most famous painting Rudolf von Habsburg on the body of Přemysl Ottokar , for which he received the Academy Prize in 1886.

On behalf of his patron Karl Dittrich jr. (1853–1918) In 1888/89 he took over the artistic design of the burial chapel, the mausoleum of the Dittrich family - owners of the former Hielle & Dittrich textile factory in Schönlinde - at the cemetery in Schönlinde. In addition to painting, he also devoted himself to heraldry , for example in 1893 he designed the city arms of Warnsdorf (Varnsdorf) and Schönlinde (Krásná Lípa). The subject of his pictures, however, often referred to biblical motifs. In Schönlinde, for example, in 1894 he painted the altarpiece Lamentation of Christ for the Chapel of the Cross and in 1897 the altarpiece Resurrection of Christ for the former death chapel behind the Maria Magdalenen Church . Both works are destroyed. The colored glass windows of the Maria Magdalenen Church in Schönlinde were designed according to his designs. He also painted the altarpiece of Christ as a teacher (everyone comes to me) for the Old Catholic Church in Schönlinde, which was newly built in 1900 . Frind is also known as the "Brožík of the Schluckenauer Land" .

He worked in Munich and Schönlinde, among others . He lived in Munich from 1886 to 1912 and worked as a genre and history painter. He participated in exhibitions in Prague , Vienna , Linz , Nuremberg , Hamburg and London . His Munich studio was photographed by Carl Teufel .

More pictures of him can be found in Żyrardów near Warsaw, where the Schönlind company Hielle & Dittrich owned a company. With Anton Amand Paudler (1844–1905) - priest, writer and teacher - he had been in lively correspondence since 1897. From 1895 to 1911 he published his own poems and short articles in the "Mitteilungen des Nordböhmischen Excursions-Club" (Leipa). After his return to Schönlinde, he lived in the house at Daubitzer Str. 2, which belonged to Rosalia Zweigelt, Hildegard Stradal's aunt .

Its most productive time was after the First World War . He portrayed important Schönlind citizens, recorded the everyday life of simple people, devoted himself to social issues and also painted fruit and flower still lifes . In several pictures he captured the city of Schönlinde, its houses and shops and the landscapes of its surroundings. They are lasting memories of this bygone time. Frind's coloring attracted widespread attention from the population, but not of particular interest from art scholars . He was an “old school painter” and remained true to the realism and artistic ideas of his teachers throughout his life. He was hostile to the new currents of his younger colleagues - such as secession and impressionism . He is also known as the "master of composition".

On his 70th birthday in 1922 he became an honorary citizen of the city and Daubitzer Strasse was renamed Frindstrasse (now Smetanova). Frind wasn't married and had no children. His estate, which was originally the property of the City of Krásná Lípa, is now in the Rumburk City Museum , where August Frind is remembered in a permanent exhibition and some of his pictures are shown.

A descendant of relatives of the painter, the academic painter Martin Frind (* 1963 in Prague), lives in Veltrusy .
