In this position he was promoted to major general on April 7, 1842. On March 11, 1843, Hülsen was given the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class, with oak leaves and a pension of 1900 thalers. He died on January 19, 1858 on Groß Arnsdorf (Mohrungen district).

Hülsen married Charlotte von Brandenstein on June 6, 1824 in Potsdam (* March 27, 1788; † March 24, 1854). The daughter Karoline Ernestine Friederike Charlotte Auguste Wilhelmine Elisabeth (born October 5, 1827) emerged from the marriage and married Baron Friedrich Printz von Buchau (born May 20, 1822) in 1851.
