Life

origin

His parents were Friedrich Fabian von Massenbach (* April 20, 1723; † March 4, 1790) and his wife Helene Charlotte, née von Auer . His father was the master of Stuttgart, state director and, most recently, Rittmeister in the cuirassier regiment No. 9 .

Military career

Massenbach came to the Bayreuth Dragoons as a Junker in April 1766 , became ensign there on December 3, 1767 and second lieutenant on July 3, 1771 . In 1778/79, Massenbach took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession and became Prime Lieutenant on April 30, 1783 after the war . On April 8, 1788 he was appointed staff captain and on June 21, 1790 major, and on September 7, 1793 chief of the squadron . In the campaign in Poland he fought in 1794/95 in the battles near Gabnicki and Plansk. On July 17, 1798 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on May 31, 1800 he became a colonel . On December 15, 1801, Massenbach was transferred to the newly established "von Rouquette" dragoon regiment as commander . At a parade on June 21, 1802 in Memel, King Friedrich Wilhelm III drew him . with the order Pour le Mérite .

During the Fourth Coalition War , Massenbach fought in the unsuccessful defense of Danzig. But his achievements were so convincing that he received the salary of a brigadier on April 8, 1807 and was promoted to major general on June 19, 1807 . As part of the reorganization of the army after the lost war, Massenbach received the order on November 25, 1807 to form the East Prussian Cuirassier Regiment from parts of the “von Wagenfeld” cuirassier regiment and the “von Rouquette” dragoon regiment . For this he was appointed brigadier of the West Prussian cavalry on December 7, 1808. That brought Massenbach a salary of 3,000 thalers plus 1,200 table money with a one-third deduction and eight rations. On March 21, 1811, he was transferred to Königsberg as a brigadier for the East Prussian Cavalry. For his performance he was promoted to lieutenant general on March 24, 1812 with a patent from March 26, 1812. He also became the commander of the cavalry in Marshal Macdonald's army . In 1812 he took part in the fighting in Courland . For the battle near Eckau he was awarded the Legion of Honor on September 4, 1812 . On December 30, 1812, Lieutenant General Johann David von Yorck surrendered and joined the Russians with the Tauroggen Convention . He sent a notice to Massenbach to join his six battalions , ten squadrons, and two batteries , but Massenbach was under the immediate command of Marshal Macdonald at Tilsit. Macdonald had no information about the whereabouts of Yorck and Massenbach also managed to unobtrusively join Yorck at night with his entire troops. That cut Macdonald's army in half. He received the Order of the Red Eagle III from the Prussian King for the battles from September 26 to October 1, 1812 . Class.

Shortly before the Wars of Liberation , on February 28, 1813, Massenbach was appointed military governor of the area between the Vistula and the Russian border. For this he received a salary of 4,000 thalers and a bonus of 2,000 thalers. On June 8, 1813, he was relieved of his post and only received a salary of 1200 thalers. Massenbach received a gift of 1000 thalers from the king and, on August 21, 1813, the Order of the Red Eagle, 1st class. On December 17, 1813 he became governor of the liberated Danzig. After the wars he received the Iron Cross II. Class on May 31, 1815 and his final farewell on October 3, 1815 with the character of a general of the cavalry and 2000 Talers pension . He died on June 3, 1819 in Schrengen, Rastenburg district.
