Location of Augustendorf in Gnarrenburg

Augustendorf ( Low German Augustendorp ) is a district of the Gnarrenburg community in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district in Lower Saxony .

Geographical location

The district of Augustendorf is located about four kilometers east of the core town of Gnarrenburg. Southeast of August village is the 1373  ha large nature reserve Huvenhoopsmoor with the Huvenhoopssee . The Augustendorfer Canal, laid out in 1852, runs through the local area.

history

Foundation of the place until today

Augustendorf was founded in 1828 by Moorkommissar Johann-Nicolaus Witte, a successor to the great moor colonist Jürgen Christian Findorff . The main source of income for the citizens until about 1925 was the mining of peat. Of the original 40 full-time farms, five still exist.

Naming

The name "Augustendorf" comes from the Duchess Auguste von Cambridge , a princess from the house of Hessen-Kassel and sister-in-law of George IV, King of Hanover and England.

Incorporations

On April 8, 1974, Augustendorf was incorporated into the Gnarrenburg community as part of the regional reform .
