The Große Steinberg rises in the southeast of the Solling and the Solling-Vogler Nature Park . Its summit is 5.5 km north-northeast of the core city of Uslar and 3.5 km northeast of Eschershausen and 3.5 km north of Vahle , two parts of Uslar.
Natural allocation
The Große Steinberg belongs in the Lower Saxon Bergland in the natural spatial main unit group Weser-Leine-Bergland (No. 37) and in the main unit Solling, Bramwald and Reinhardswald (370) to the subunit Northern Solling (370.0). To the south the landscape falls into the subunit Kuppiger Solling (370.1).

The Große Steinberg has two peaks, the peaks of which are almost 570 m apart in a north-west-south-east direction:
- Northwest summit : approx. 492.5 m ( ⊙ ), with an altitude indication near the summit of 491.7 m on the forest path crossing
- South-east summit (also called Kleiner Steinberg ): approx. 491 m ( ⊙ ), with an altitude of 490.5 m on a forest path

Flowing waters
The Wolfsbach rises on the north-western slope of the mountain at Wolfskopf, the Lummerke on the northern slope and the Riepenbach on the transition area to the east-northeastern Wolfstrang; all three feed the Ilme . Southeast below the mountain at the Hohe Warte is the source of a small tributary of the Malliehagenbach tributary coming from Wolfstrang, which flows into the Rehbach . The Martinsbach rises on the southern slope between Hoher Warte and Henneckenberg and a small tributary of the Italbach rises on the southwest slope at Jägeranger, both of which flow into the Ahle .
Protected areas
Parts of the protected landscape area Solling ( CDDA -Nr. 324596; 1999; 330.149 km² ), the fauna-flora-habitat- area forests in eastern Solling (FFH-Nr. 4223-301; 14.58 km²) and the Solling bird sanctuary (VSG no. 4223-401; 40.6 km²).
Harzblick observation tower
On the southern slope of the south-east summit (Kleiner Steinberg) , immediately above the Sollstraße forest path, at a height of about 447 m, there is the estimated 8 m high Harzblick observation tower ( ⊙ ), which was erected from wood. Originally the Sollingturm was supposed to be built on this mountain, but after it was built on the 4.3 km west-southwest lying Strutberg , the Harzblick was set up on the Großer Steinberg.
From its observation deck is often a good distance vision: As you look to the east to the resin in which the chunks ( 1141.2 m ) can be seen to the south-southeast to Gauss Tower on the Hohenhagen ( 492.5 m ) in Dransfelder city forest , according South to the Kaufunger Wald (max. 643.4 m ) and in the south-west you can see the Reinhardswald (max. 472.2 m ).
