Babylon is one of ten towns in Suffolk County , New York State . It's on Long Island . At the time of the 2010 United States Census , the Town of Babylon had 214,191 residents. Parts of Jones Beach Island , Captree Island, and Fire Island belong to Babylon, which borders Nassau County to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the south . In the far west, Babylon is about 20 miles from New York City in east Queens and about 50 miles from Manhattan . Within the town there is a village of the same name .

The western border of the town forms the border with Nassau County (New York) , and to the south Babylon borders the Atlantic Ocean.
According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 295.7 km 2 , of which 135.4 km 2 is land and 160.2 km 2 (or 54.20%) is water.

history
The region was once called South Huntington. As Nathaniel Conklin and his family moved into the area, he gave him the basis of ancient Babylon to 1803 the name New Babylon . The new town was officially formed in 1872 when it was separated from the Town of Huntington .

Airports
Opened in 1927, Republic Airport in East Farmingdale was originally built by Fairchild Aircraft and bought by Republic Aviation in 1939 . From 1936 to 1980, Zahn's Airport in North Amityville existed from 1936 to 1980.
Railways
The Babylon Branch of the Long Island Rail Road is the main rail link in Babylon. It comes from Nassau County and ends in the Village of Babylon. Stations are between Amityville and Babylon. Freight traffic is also handled via the Central Branch ; this partially uses the Montauk Branch , which branches off the main line in Bethpage. To the east of Babylon Station, the Montauk Branch continues to the Town of Islip. In addition, the main line runs through the northern part of town; she has stations in Pinelawn, Wyandanch and Deer Park.

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Babylon was inhabited by 211,792 people. The population density was 4050 people per km 2 . There were 71,186 housing units at an average of 525.6 per km 2 . The population in Babylon was 76.34% White , 15.65% Black or African American , 0.27% Native American , 1.89% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 3.36% said others Belonging to races and 2.47% named two or more races. 10.05% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Babylon were distributed to 69,048 households out of which 35.7% were living in children under the age of 18. 87.6% of households were married, 13.7% had a female head of household without a husband and 24.1% were not families. 19.1% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 8.5% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 3.03 and the average family size was 3.45.
The population was divided into 26.0% minors, 7.5% 18–24 year olds, 32.4% 25–44 year olds, 21.6% 45–64 year olds and 12.4% aged 65 years or more. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 women there were 93.0 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 89.3 men.
The median household income in Babylon was 60,064 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 66,261 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 45,160 versus $ 32,062 for women. The per capita income was $ 22,844. 4.6% of the population and 6.7% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 7.4% of minors and 7.4% of those aged 65 and over.
