history
The islands were given to the British in 1812 by the Sultan of Palembang , who exchanged them with the Dutch in 1814 for possessions in India . They have been part of independent Indonesia since 1949. Law No. 27 of the year 2000 of December 4, 2000 declared the archipelago to be the 31st province of Indonesia. Originally it consisted only of the two administrative districts (islands) Bangka in the west and Belitung in the east, as well as the capital Pangkal Pinang on the larger island of Bangka. In February 2003, four more administrative districts were formed by Law No. 5.
economy
The islands play an important role due to their tin occurrence. This raw material has been extracted since the 18th century, and the Indonesian government has a monopoly on extraction and processing to this day. Environmental protection organizations criticize enormous pollution and a lack of social standards for workers.
