The sole owner Josef Schilling founded the bank on March 13, 1923 under the name "Josef Schilling Bankbetrieb Hammelburg" with its registered office at Bahnhofstrasse 86 in Hammelburg. In 1929, Hans Leikauf joined the bank as authorized signatory. At the time it had total assets of 1.3 million Reichsmarks .

After the currency changeover, the bank had an opening balance sheet in 1948 with total assets of DM 664,000 . Five years later the balance sheet total was 2.5 million DM. In 1959 it was renamed “Bank Schilling & Co.” and operated as an OHG . The shareholders were Hans Leikauf and Josef Schilling, his wife Therese and Karl Schilling. Hans Leikauf left in 1965, Theodor Adam Schmitt joined as a personally liable partner. After the death of Josef Schilling in 1968 the bank changed its seat and now resided at Marktplatz 10 in Hammelburg. The bank expanded and opened branches in Bad Brückenau (1970) and Würzburg (1976).

Therese Schilling died in 1979 and Karl Schilling also left the company. The son of the partner Theodor Adam Schmitt, Hubert-Ralph Schmitt, joined the bank in 1983. In the same year the branch in Fulda was opened. In 1990 a branch was opened in Meiningen . The Steinbach-Hallenberg branch established in 1992 was closed again in 2005.

The corporate form was transformed into a stock corporation in 1996 . Theodor Adam Schmitt took over the position of chairman of the supervisory board, while his son Hubert-Ralph joined the board. In 2002 a branch was opened in Bamberg . After the death of Theodor Adam Schmitt in 2007, Rudolf Nörr became chairman of the supervisory board. The branch in Wiesbaden was opened on July 1, 2007, and a branch in Gelnhausen on January 4, 2010 . A branch that opened in Wilhelmshaven in 2008 has since been closed. On July 3, 2017, the bank expanded its private banking locations with a branch in Munich and on September 1, 2017 in Mannheim. On October 1, 2018, the private bank expanded its Düsseldorf branch.

In 2019, Bank Schilling & Co Aktiengesellschaft was taken over by Merkur Bank KGaA . The corresponding entry of the takeover via Diana Projekt AG Co. KG , based in Hammelburg, was announced in the commercial register on October 11, 2019.
