Beaufort is a city in the state of South Carolina in the United States and the county seat of Beaufort County . The city was founded in 1711 and is considered the second oldest city in South Carolina after Charleston .

The city is located on Port Royal Island , an island in Port Royal Sound on the Atlantic coast of South Carolina. In and near the city is the Reconstruction Era National Monument .
Demographics
At the time of the 2000 census ( US Census 2000 ) the city had 12,950 inhabitants on a land area of 48.2 km². The median age was 30.1 years (US national average: 35.3 years). Beaufort is a popular holiday resort, the setting for numerous films and is known for an impressive harbor on the Sound. The military training facility Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island of the US Marine Corps is located in the village and Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort is just outside .
