Wilhelm Karl Reinhold von Beckendorff (born February 17, 1769 in Stevelin , † April 7, 1845 in Salzwedel ) was a Prussian major general and 2nd in command of the Magdeburg Fortress .

Life

origin

His parents were Karl von Beckendorff and his wife Antoniette Charlotta, née von Zülich (1726–1808). The father was a Brunswick captain a. D. and Mr. on Stevelin.

Military career

On September 6, 1785 Beckendorff came as a private corporal in the infantry regiment "von Anhalt" of the Prussian Army and was promoted to second lieutenant until February 1789 . He had been adjutant of the 2nd Battalion since 1787, and in 1798 he was appointed regimental adjutant. On October 29, 1799 he became Premier Lieutenant and on January 25, 1805, Chief of Staff . During the Fourth Coalition War Beckendorff fought in the Battle of Preussisch Eylau and the battles near Soldau, Gollau, on the Passarge and Königsberg. For Prussian Eylau he received the Russian Order of Saint Stanislaus II. Class and on December 2, 1807 the Order of Pour le Mérite .

After the Treaty of Tilsit , he joined the 1st East Prussian Infantry Regiment on November 4, 1808 as captain and company commander. On October 25, 1810, he was aggregated as a major in the 3rd East Prussian Infantry Regiment . On March 23, 1811, he joined the 2nd East Prussian Infantry Regiment as commander of the Fusilier Battalion. On April 10, 1811, he was transferred back to the 3rd East Prussian Infantry Regiment. In the campaign of 1812 in Kurland, he fought in the skirmishes near Dahlenkirchen, Timotzana, Eckau, Schlackhof and Ruhenthal.

During the Wars of Liberation Beckendorff took part in the battles near Möckern , Halle and Magdeburg, Luckau and the siege of Stettin. He earned the Iron Cross II. Class and the Order of the Sword II. Class in the Battle of Großbeeren . Beckendorff received the Iron Cross First Class for Dennewitz . In the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig he was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir IV class. On December 27, 1813 he was commissioned to lead the 2nd Kurmärk Landwehr Regiment and on May 31, 1815 was promoted to lieutenant colonel. In the summer campaign of 1815 he fought in the battles at Ligny and Belle Alliance . In Belle Alliance he was wounded and lost three fingers on his right hand. Beckendorff received the Order of Saint Anna II Class.

After the war he came to Magdeburg on February 16, 1816 as 2nd Commander and was given six weeks' leave at the beginning of March 1816 in order to cure his wounds. On March 30, 1818 he was promoted to colonel with a patent from April 8, 1818 . In 1825 he received the service cross . Under awarding of the character as a major general Beckendorff was on 20 March 1834 an annual pension offset from 1750 taler to retire. He died on April 7, 1845 in Salzwedel.

Beckendorff married Sophie Christine Antoinette Freiin von Zülich (* 1770; † December 11, 1837) on September 24, 1798 in Sältz (Mecklenburg). The couple had a son:

  • Wilhelm Franz Christian Leopold Gustav Heinrich (* August 28, 1801; † 1858), retired secondary lieutenant. D., district treasurer (accounting officer) in Salzwedel ∞ Carolina von Mevius (* 1806)
