Benjamin "Ben" Matschke (born July 19, 1982 in Heilbronn ) is a German handball trainer and former handball player . He currently trains the Eulen Ludwigshafen in the handball Bundesliga .

Career

As a player

Benjamin Matschke first played football at VfR Heilbronn as a child . His handball talent was discovered in the school competition Youth trained for the Olympics . His handball career began when he was B-youth at TSV Weinsberg . At the age of 17, Matschke made his debut among the active players. For three years he played in Weinsberg under coach Thomas König in the top division. Together with König, he moved to TV Kornwestheim in the 2nd handball league in 2003 . In the 2004/05 season Matschke played with a second game right for VfL Pfullingen in the handball Bundesliga . After the merger of Kornwestheim with TSG Oßweil , the 1.89-meter-tall right back player played for HBR Ludwigsburg in the 2006/07 season . From 2007 Matschke should play for the successor club SVK Salamander Stuttgart . Since the club had to file for bankruptcy before the start of the 2007/08 season , Matschke moved to TSG Friesenheim in July 2007 . As a player, Matschke celebrated the championship in the second Bundesliga South in the 2009/10 season . This also meant the club's first promotion to the 1st handball league. After one season, the Ludwigshafen handball players had to leave the upper house again in 2010/11 as a relegated team. As the captain of Friesenheim, Matschke had to end his playing career after tearing two cruciate ligaments within ten months in 2012.

As a trainer

After the end of his playing career, Matschke became head coach at TV Hochdorf in the 3rd League Season South from January 2013 . On the last day of the 2013/14 season, they were relegated. In the following two seasons, 2013/14 and 2014/15, Matschke Hochdorf took third place.

In June 2015 Matschke switched to the former Bundesliga relegated TSG Friesenheim as head coach. In his first year as head coach in Ludwigshafen, he barely missed direct promotion. The team finished fourth in the 2015/16 season . A year later, the "owls" achieved promotion to the 1st handball league with third place . After the greatest success as a coach up to then, the first year as a Bundesliga coach followed. In a heart-stopping final on the last match day of the 2017/18 season , the team was able to celebrate relegation for the first time in the club's history by one point. In the 2018/19 season, too , they managed to keep their league again in a heartbeat final on the last match day. In December 2019, Matschke extended his contract with the Eulen regardless of the league without a fixed contract term.

At the same time as his playing career, Matschke studied sport and business administration . In addition to his coaching job he's two days in the week teacher for sports and business at a high school in Schwetzingen .

Matschke is married and has a daughter and a son.
