Benoît Tremsal (* 1952 in Rupt-sur-Moselle , Département Vosges ) is a Franco-German visual artist .

life and work

After studying music and piano, Benoît Tremsal was a member of the Friedrichshof municipality from 1977 to 1990 . There he studied drawing and painting. In 1982 Tremsal worked with Joseph Beuys and the Free International University (FIU) as a tree ambassador for the 7000 oaks campaign at documenta 7 . The move to Amsterdam in 1987 was followed by a work stay in the Canary Islands between 1988 and 2000 . From 1993 onwards, Tremsal created his first outdoor works.

“It was crucial that I came from music, because music creates a form of thinking in structures, in rhythms, in forms, and I took all of that with me into the visual arts. In addition, there were the influences of the new art movements minimalism, land art, earth works (...), which have developed in America. (...) Beuys has decisively shaped my personal concept of art. I discovered completely new and very broad dimensions in art, for example the time dimension in sculpture, a social or ecological dimension. (...) I want to make something visible, to encourage the viewer to see things with different eyes; I bring an irritation. What the viewer makes of it is ultimately the work of art. Art is all about making people thoughtful. "
