history

Bergerdamm is probably one of the younger villages in the Havelland, it was first mentioned in the directory in 1897.
From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 1970s, hemp cultivation and its processing (hemp factory, built in 1918), initiated by the Berlin factory owner Arthur Schurig (* July 19, 1869 in Gröbers ; † 1932) and the "Deutsche Hanfanbau- Society ”, the life of Bergerdamm and gave the district Hanffabrik its name. Hemp cultivation was intensified even more after the First World War to compensate for the loss of sisal from the former German colonies . A prisoner-of-war camp was set up specifically to improve the Luch area , and some of the predominantly Russian and French prisoners of war were also needed to grow hemp. The number of prisoners of war is unknown, but it is estimated that around 5,000 prisoners were put to work in the Havelländisches Luch. To advance the renovation work, a field railway network was created and in the spring of 1914 a standard-gauge flying track was laid between the Berger Damm station on the Berlin-Hamburg Railway and the town of Bergerdamm (distance approx. 1 km). After completion of the renovation work, parts of the field railway network were retained for use as an agricultural field railway, including the routes: Bergerdamm - Hertefeld - Ribbeckshorst and Paulinenaue - Eichberge - Bergerdamm . In 1957, the Hertefeld district was incorporated into Bergerdamm.
The era of hemp cultivation and its processing ended in 1972/73, in the course of the last major wave of nationalization, the hemp factory was incorporated into the VEB Plakotex and converted to processing plastic into tarpaulins, tents and inflatable speedboat dummies. The speedboat dummies served as a means of psychological warfare . After the turning point in 1992, the hemp factory came to an end and in 2004 the dismantling and demolition of the factory began. When the 20 m chimney was blown up in February 2005, the former landmark of the Bergerdammer district Hanffabrik finally disappeared and only the name of the district is reminiscent of a piece of Brandenburg's industrial history.
