Bergland (wine-growing region)
With around 237 hectares of vineyards, the Bergland wine-growing region is by far the smallest wine-growing region in Austria . It comprises the growing areas of the five federal states of Upper Austria , Carinthia , Salzburg , Tyrol and Vorarlberg . The wine-growing region has experienced strong growth in recent years and grew from 82 hectares of vineyards in 2009 to 237 hectares.
Bergland wine-growing region by federal state
Carinthia
- Location: St. Veit district around the Längsee and Hochosterwitz Castle , in the Lavant valley and in the vicinity of the cities of Klagenfurt and Feldkirchen
- White wine varieties: 80% (mainly white Burgundy varieties, Sauvignon Blanc , Riesling , Traminer )
- Red wine varieties: Zweigelt , Blauer Burgunder
- Cultivation area: 170 ha
Upper Austria
- Location: individual smaller sunny locations spread across the entire state
- White wine varieties: Grüner Veltliner , Chardonnay
- Red wine varieties: Zweigelt , Roesler
- Cultivation area: 45 ha.
Salzburg
- Location: on the Untersberg near Großgmain , on the Mönchsberg in Salzburg and at the Benedictine Abbey of Michaelbeuern
- White wine varieties: Early Red Veltliner , Grüner Veltliner , Gelber Muskateller
- Red wine varieties: Zweigelt
- Cultivation area: 7 ha.
Tyrol
- Location: Haiming , Tarrenz and Silz communities
- White wine varieties: Chardonnay
- Red wine types: Blauer Burgundy
- Cultivation area: 5 ha.
Vorarlberg
- Location: municipalities of Bregenz and Röthis as well as in Walgau
- White wine varieties: Müller-Thurgau , Riesling
- Red wine types: Blauer Burgundy
- Cultivation area: 10 ha.
Protected geographical indication
Bergland is a protected geographical indication (PGI) for wine with the traditional name Landwein and for partially fermented grape must with the traditional name Sturm . The specification of a smaller geographical name, e.g. for the federal state, is not permitted here. The indication therefore serves the designation of origin of simpler wines for which no more specific protected designation of origin can be claimed.
