Berlin settlement star
As Berliner development rating is the planning basis of the development region Berlin , the so-called bacon belt , respectively. The name Siedlungsstern alludes to the radial or star-shaped expansion of Berlin's settlements in the Brandenburg area.
Origin and characteristics
In contrast to other metropolises , Berlin does not grow uniformly into the Berlin area, but has a regional backdrop . The expansion of settlements and the development of surrounding communities around Berlin happens much more through controlled planning that is recorded in the state development plan between Berlin and Brandenburg. According to this plan and the system of the settlement star, new residential areas may only arise along the lines of the S-Bahn and regional trains. The areas in between should be preserved as open spaces and less densely populated areas.
The joint state planning for Berlin and Brandenburg presented in 2019 extends the settlement star by two points - in the north to Wandlitz , in the east to Werneuchen .

Arguments for the settlement star
- Cities and communities along the railway lines usually already have regional and / or S-Bahn stations .
- A concentration on the already densely populated areas along the railway lines counteracts further urban sprawl in the Berlin area.
- Existing infrastructure is used better.
Arguments against the settlement star
- The development of places off the rails is (artificially) slowed down.
- The population density within the settlement star continues to increase, while it tends to stagnate in the more distant areas.
