Bernhard Hofmann (* 1959 in Munich ) is a German musician, arranger and professor for music education at the University of Augsburg .

Life

He completed his studies at the University of Music and Theater in Munich (teaching music at grammar schools, 1st state examination in 1983) and at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich ( music education , musicology , education ). In 1994 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the history of Bavarian school music in the first half of the 20th century. He also completed private studies with Margret Langen (singing) and master classes with Hellmuth Rilling (conducting). Between 1983 and 1985, Bernhard Hofmann as a trainee teacher in Passau and Nuremberg worked (second state examination 1985), 1985 to 1994 teacher at secondary schools in Munich ( Michaeli-Gymnasium Munich , Ludwigsgymnasium ). In addition, he led various out-of-school orchestras and choirs. Parallel to his activity as a teacher, Bernhard Hofmann took on teaching positions for choir conducting (1989/90, University of Music and Theater Munich) as well as music theory and ear training (Ludwig Maximilians University Munich, 1992–1994).

From 1980 to 1990 Bernhard Hofmann was a member and arranger of the vocal ensemble " Die Singphoniker ". With this he won, among other things, the first price at the competition for vocal ensembles in Gorizia / Italy in 1988. He also worked as a studio musician, composing music for television games and commercials. He has penned numerous arrangements of vocal works, including for Die Singphoniker, Singer Pur and VoicesInTime as well as rock-pop arrangements, including for Claudia Koreck . Since 2012 he has been the keyboardist and singer of the rock'n'roll band "Thunderbirds".

From 1994 to 1996 Bernhard Hofmann was a research assistant with Eckhard Nolte at the Institute for Music Education at LMU Munich , and from 1996 to 2011 Professor for Music Education at the University of Regensburg . In 2000 he was appointed to the chair for music education at the University of Mozarteum , Innsbruck department , and in 2001 to the chair for music education and music didactics at the Otto Friedrich University in Bamberg . He refused both calls. In the Regensburg years, Bernhard Hofmann initiated and implemented two pilot projects in collaboration with the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture , which had a lasting impact on music teacher training in Bavaria: The "Music Pedagogical Driving License" was used as a template for the " Basic Music Qualification " that was later introduced throughout Bavaria ; This training concept is intended to ensure that every prospective elementary school teacher in Bavaria has at least basic knowledge of singing and making music with classes. As part of the “Regensburg Model”, grammar school teachers have been trained in music since 2002 in a cooperation between the University and the University of Catholic Church Music and Music Education in Regensburg , which is unique in Germany . With an integrative training approach, in which artistic music practice, specialist reflection, music pedagogical theory and test treatment in school teaching practice interpenetrate, Bernhard Hofmann set innovative impulses for high school teacher training throughout Bavaria.

Since April 1, 2011, he has held the chair for music education at the University of Augsburg , and since autumn 2015 he has headed the Uni Big Band Augsburg. From 2015 to 2017 he was dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences . Bernhard Hofmann's research focuses on historical music education and music didactics . In addition to the theory-led examination of aspects of "good" music lessons, in recent years he has increasingly turned to the question of professionalism and professional competencies of music teachers, which he is pursuing in the context of interdisciplinary projects at the interface between music education and empirical educational research , including in the FALKO project .

Bernhard Hofmann is the author and co-editor of numerous textbooks for music lessons, the author of school radio broadcasts and concert educational materials for the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra . For the Association of Bavarian School Musicians (VBS) , of which he was deputy chairman from 2011 to 2019, he publishes the book series "Contributions to the Days of Bavarian School Music". Bernhard Hofmann is also involved in educational policy as spokesman for the German Society for School Music (DGS) .
