Michaeli high school

The Michaeli-Gymnasium Munich (short: "MGM" ) is a 1971 founded scientific-technological and linguistic grammar school in Munich District Berg am Laim .

History and Development

Triggered by the sharp increase in Munich's population in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as the increasing popularity of schoolchildren and parents in favor of the grammar school type in the 1960s, there was a shortage in Munich from the mid-1960s High schools. In response to this, as part of an extensive new building program in the districts outside the Middle Ring , numerous high schools were rebuilt in the sober concrete architecture typical of the time at the beginning of the 1970s.

This also includes the Michaeli-Gymnasium, which was opened at the beginning of the 1971/72 school year. In order to save costs and time for planning, the Michaeli-Gymnasium is based exactly on the construction plans of the Thomas-Mann-Gymnasium, which was newly built at the same time, in the Fürstenried district of Munich , so that these two schools were built absolutely identical. The Wilhelm-Hausenstein-Gymnasium in the Bogenhausen district , which was also built at the same time, was also built according to identical construction plans, but was extended by a full third floor.

Due to the unchecked increase in the number of pupils in the 1970s, the Michaeli-Gymnasium, which was designed for around 1,000 pupils, soon reached its capacity limit, so that hiking classes had to be set up from the mid-1970s. A makeshift building made of wood, the so-called “pavilion”, with eight additional classrooms, helped. It was handed over to school in the 1979/80 school year - the number of students had meanwhile risen to over 1,200. Due to the weaker cohorts that followed, the number of schoolchildren fell permanently to below 1,000 from the mid-1980s. In April 2012 it was closed and demolished due to acute danger of collapse.

Due to the large number of newly built residential areas in the east of Munich, among other things, the number of students has been increasing again since the early 2000s and with almost 1,200 students is almost back to the level of the late 1970s. The students are currently spread across 35 classes and 105 courses in the college level.

In order to meet the requirements of the eight-year high school introduced in Bavaria in the 2004/05 school year, a second extension was built for the 2007/08 school year with a cafeteria, common rooms and rooms for supervising homework. In the meantime, this building has been expanded to include more classrooms, a computer room and a new teachers' room. Furthermore, a new 3rd gymnasium was built and in 2012 the school yard was renovated.

Naming

The name of the Michaeli-Gymnasium is reminiscent of the location of the school near the former district of Michaeliburg and near the St. Michaels Church as the landmark of the district. The names Karl-Valentin-Gymnasium and Olympia-Gymnasium were also shortlisted for naming purposes in the early 1970s , as the first year of the Michaeli-Gymnasium was the same year as the Summer Olympics in Munich.

Buildings and school grounds

The modifications to the main building for fire protection renovation have been completed. The school currently consists of the square main building with an inner courtyard, the cafeteria with the cafeteria extension (approx. 15 classrooms), which consists of an extension and an additional wing with a small auditorium, the three gyms and a large sports field with a football field , a red hard court, a 100 m race track and a long jump sandpit. The new beach volleyball court was completed in December 2017 after the old one had to be demolished due to the construction of the third gym. (As of April 2018)
