Bernhard von dem Knesebeck

Friedrich August Bernhard von dem Knesebeck (born May 23, 1817 in Celle , † April 14, 1887 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the Erfurt Fortress .

Life

His parents were the Hanoverian Major General Friedrich August Wilhelm von dem Knesebeck (1775–1842) and his wife Friederike Amalie, née von Bothmer (1781–1855).

Military career

Knesebeck visited the cadet house in Berlin from August 1831 and was then aggregated as a second lieutenant in the Guard Reserve Infantry Landwehr Regiment of the Prussian Army and assigned on February 17, 1837. From May 1, 1844 to March 31, 1851 he was adjutant and accounting officer in the 2nd Battalion of the 1st Guard Landwehr Regiment in Stettin . During that time he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on October 20, 1849 . On September 2, 1852, Knesebeck became a captain and from October 1, 1853 to September 30, 1854, he was assigned to the Guard Rifle Battalion . On June 26, 1856 he came to the Guard Fusilier Regiment as a company commander . There he was promoted to major on July 1, 1860 . From June 1, 1861, Knesebeck was commanded as leader of the 1st Battalion in the 2nd Guard Landwehr Regiment. On February 21, 1863 he was appointed commander of the 2nd Battalion in the Guard Fusilier Regiment. From November 3, 1863 to January 15, 1864 Knesebeck worked as a stage commander at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin. On June 18, 1865, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel.

During the war against Austria in 1866 Knesebeck fought in the skirmishes at Soor and Königinhof , as well as in the Battle of Königgrätz . On September 29, 1866, he received the Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords. On October 30, 1866, he was also transferred as commander to Infantry Regiment No. 42 and promoted to colonel on December 31, 1866 with a patent from October 30, 1866 .

In the war that followed against France , Knesebeck fought in the battles at Gravelotte and Villiers in 1870/71, as well as the siege of Metz and the battles of Dole, Auxonne and Dijon. From October 1 to November 1, 1870, he was in command of the 5th Infantry Brigade and from January 22 to March 6, 1871, he was the leader of the combined "Knesebeck" brigade . It consisted of Infantry Regiments No. 60 and 72 and was used by the VII Army Corps . Knesebeck was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class, for Metz .

He married Anna Fanny Schön on October 3, 1851 in Stettin (* April 13, 1833; † March 6, 1907). The couple had several children:
