The district central library Philipp-Schaeffer , formerly the main library of the Städtische Volksbücherei Berlin-Mitte , is a public library in the Berlin district of Mitte and the district central library of the Berlin-Mitte city library . The library was named in 1951 after the orientalist , sinologist and resistance fighter Philipp Schaeffer , who worked here from the opening of the library in December 1928 to March 1932.

The library is located in Brunnenstrasse opposite the Weinbergspark at the intersection with Invalidenstrasse / Veteranenstrasse . The Brunnenstraße / Invalidenstraße tram stop and the northern access to the Rosenthaler Platz underground station on the U8 line are in the immediate vicinity .

history

The library was opened on December 8, 1928 as the first modern central district library in Brunnenstrasse 181. She took over the holdings of the former Heimann library at Alexandrinenstrasse 26 in Kreuzberg , which had been handed over to the city of Berlin in 1920.

The library describes itself as a trendy meeting place and one of the most innovative libraries in the city in the center of the new center of Berlin . Characteristic are the puristically furnished rooms with a loft ambience , which were set up in 1996 in the Brunnenhöfe, a typical turn-of- the- century Berlin industrial estate . A special attraction is the generously equipped children's library in the basement with its numerous niches for retreat and opportunities to read aloud.

As in the other libraries in Berlin, there is free internet access via WLAN and various PC workstations with office applications in the computer center . Laptops can be borrowed for use in the library . Scanners , color laser printers , copiers and e-book readers that can be borrowed complete the offer. A relaxation area below the fourth courtyard with a glass roof offers relaxation opportunities. Above that there is an outdoor reading garden.

media

The library has a stock of 118,000 media, about a third of which are audio-visual media . 24,000 media alone belong to the children's area. The focus is on film and music , audio books and English-language audiobooks, as well as IT literature and travel guides. 140 newspapers and magazines are available.

The Berlin Book Islands are intended to provide elementary school children with adventurous access to literature . Kinter meet people who are directly involved in the creation of literature. Under the motto "Yesterday at the fair - today in Berlin", the City Library Mitte presents audio books from the publishers' current autumn and spring programs in the Philipp Schaeffer Library.

The International Children's and Young People's Literature section offers a wide range of readings and events for young viewers but also for adults who are interested in children's and young people's literature. Every year around 15 mostly international authors and illustrators are invited to present their books in Berlin. Readings, workshops and workshop discussions have been taking place in the children's library for several years. The library is the exhibition site for “The Extraordinary Book”.

Makerspace

As part of the Digital Worlds project of the Association of Public Libraries in Berlin , a space for doing, tinkering and creativity was created in the Philipp Schaeffer Library , in which library users can realize themselves creatively and productively. Photo, film, design and fashion are the main focuses of this newly created space. In cooperation with the mediencollege Berlin , a varied workshop program with corresponding topics relevant to the neighborhood is being created. For this purpose, the Makerspace offers events such as: Basic drawing skills, an introduction to textile printing, a digitization workshop for slides, pictures and records, an introduction to the sewing machine or an introduction to 3D printing.

The Brunnenhof is a listed building that was built between 1908 and 1909 according to plans by the builder Richard Bloos. The steel frame construction allows variable use, so that one of the most modern cinemas of the time was set up in addition to shops on the ground floor. The Elite Lichspiele existed from 1909 to 1960. The building complex has three transverse buildings that are connected to one another and is four-storey throughout with extended attics and basement levels. In addition to the library, the building is also used by other companies.

The library extends over three courtyards and three floors with an audience area of ​​2200 m² with a reading garden in the fourth courtyard.
