Osgar trophy

The Bild-Osgar was a media prize that was awarded annually from 1994 to 2009 by the German tabloid Bild in Leipzig. This prize was awarded to “people who, with their work and work, make a contribution to peace, freedom and the unity of Germany and Europe”. The prize consisted of a porcelain figure from the Royal Porcelain Manufactory KPM Berlin . Up to and including 2008, 88 winners had been chosen.

On December 8, 2008, the Axel-Springer-Verlag announced that all events in 2009, including the awarding of the Osgar Media Prize, would be canceled. The reason for the rejection was the international financial crisis . However, in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, it was decided to award three honorary prizes to the fathers of German unity Helmut Kohl , Michail Gorbatschow and George HW Bush . The awards were presented in person in the home of the award winners. No prizes have been awarded since 2009.

In May 2010, Axel Springer Verlag registered “Bild-Osgar” as a word mark with the German Patent and Trademark Office . The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awarded the Oscar film prizes, saw it as a violation of its word mark “Oscar”, which has been registered in the EU since 2004, and sued for deletion. The Berlin Regional Court upheld the lawsuit and prohibited Axel Springer Verlag from using the term “Osgar” for a media award.
