The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Alba Iulia ( Latin Archidioecesis Albae Iuliensis , Hungarian Gyulafehérvári főegyházmegye ) is in Romania located Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church .

history

Founded in 1009 by King Stephan I of the Kingdom of Hungary as the diocese of Transylvania with its seat in Alba Iulia ( Hungarian : Gyulafehérvár , German : Karlsburg, Weißenburg ). After the Concordat concluded between the Kingdom of Romania and the Holy See , it changed its name to the Diocese of Alba Iulia on March 22, 1932. On August 5, 1991, Pope John Paul II elevated the diocese to an immediate archbishopric with the Apostolic Constitution Quod satis constat . The first archbishop was Lajos Bálint .
