Sea of blocks on the plateau summit

The summit area consists of a huge block pile made of angular granite slabs, rare mosses and lichens colonize the rock debris. The area is designated as a nature reserve with 4.1 hectares . Below the summit the mountain is covered with coniferous forest. Forest management is carried out by the Bavarian State Forests, Fichtelberg Forestry Company.

The slab was first mentioned in a document in 1393 as "die plancken" in a description of the rain of the forest, which at that time belonged to the burgrave of Nuremberg. The mountain got its name because of the plate-like summit area.
