Bonaventure Kloppenburg

Karl Josef Bonaventura Kloppenburg OFM (actually Karl Josef Kloppenburg ; born November 2, 1919 in Molbergen , Germany ; † May 8, 2009 in Novo Hamburgo , Brazil ) was Bishop of Novo Hamburgo .

Life

After finishing school in Rolante , he attended the seminary in São Leopoldo in 1936/1937 and the seminary in Santa Maria in 1938/1939 . From 1940 to 1942 he studied philosophy in the seminary of São Leopoldo and from 1943 to 1947 theology in the Franciscan monastery in Petrópolis . Bonaventura Kloppenburg received in the December 21, 1946 Bagé in Rio Grande do Sul , the ordination . He then studied dogmatics at the Pontifical University Antonianum in Rome , where he also received his doctorate in 1950 .

Bonaventura Kloppenburg was Professor of Dogmatics at the Universidade Católica de Petrópolis (1951 to 1971), the Catholic University in Porto Alegre (1972) and at the Franciscan University Antonianum in Rome (1973); from 1974 to 1982 he was rector of the Latin American Pastoral Institute (IPLA) of CELAM in Medellín . The Revista Eclesiástica Brasileira was published by him between 1951 and 1972.

From 1962 to 1965 he was the peritus of the Second Vatican Council . Between 1975 and 1990 he was an appointed member of the International Theological Commission , which was headed by Joseph Ratzinger , for four terms . Bonaventura Kloppenburg was a long-time member of the Roman Congregation for the Clergy , the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity . At the CELAM general conferences in Rio de Janeiro in 1955, in Medellín in 1968 and in Puebla in 1979 he worked as a theological advisor.

On 22 May 1982 Pope appointed him John Paul II. To the titular of Vulturaria and auxiliary bishop in the archdiocese of Sao Salvador da Bahia . The Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia, Avelar Cardinal Brandão Vilela , donated him the episcopal ordination on August 1st of the same year; Co- consecrators were Alfredo Vicente Cardinal Scherer , Archbishop of Porto Alegre , and Alfonso López Trujillo , Archbishop of Medellín . He chose Sub Umbris Fideliter as the episcopal motto .

On August 8, 1986, he was appointed Bishop of Novo Hamburgo. On November 22, 1995, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

He was Leonardo Boff's doctoral supervisor , but broke with Boff. Kloppenburg was considered a companion of Joseph Ratzinger ( Benedict XVI. ).

In 1999 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Jesuit University Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (Unisinos) , São Leopoldo.
