Boris
Boris is a male first and family name.
Origin and meaning
The first proven bearer of this name was the Bulgarian ruler Boris I. Michael (852 / 853-889 / 890) (Greek Βόωρίς [ Booris ] or Βόγορίς [ Bogoris ]). Therefore, the name is assumed to have an origin from Old Bulgarian . The Turkish translation would be “(little) wolf” .
An origin from Persian is possible . There is the name Behrus ( Behrouz ). “Bogh” or “Bagh” means “God” and thus the name “Bog (h) oris” means the “divine” or the “heavenly”.
There is also a Slavic origin version, according to which Boris was the Bulgarian abbreviated form of Borislav .
The name Boris is little known as a short form of the Hungarian female first name Borbála (Barbara) or the male first name Barabás .
name day
Name day is the 2. May , date of death of the Bulgarian National Holy Tsar Boris I . He died on May 2nd in 907 as a monk in the Panteleimon monastery near the capital Veliky Preslaw . The brothers Boris and Gleb were presumably canonized in 1071; they are the first saints of the Russian Church.
