The Borowa Góra (German Hoheberg ) is a pre-summit of the 1188  m npm high Kolbenberg (Polish Lysečina , Czech Lysečiny ). With a height of 1056  m npm , it is one of the few mountains over a thousand meters on the Polish side of the Giant Mountains .

location

Like the main summit one kilometer southwest on the other side of the border, the mountain belongs to the nine-kilometer long area of the so-called piston ridge (also border ridge , Polish Grzbiet Lasocki , Czech Pomezní hřeben ). This elongated ridge separates the Giant Mountains from its southeastern foothills, the Rehorn Mountains ( Rýchory in Czech ). In this promontory, four kilometers to the southeast, lies the next valley town: the Polish village of Jarkowice (German: Städtisches Hermsdorf ) in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship .

Hydrology

The north and north-west slopes drain into the Biały Strumień (German Weissgraben ), the water of which converges with that of the Złotna (German Goldbach ). The Goldbach then takes the water from the northeast slope before the Srebrnik (German Silberbach ) flows in with the waters from the southern slope. A little later, the Goldbach flows into the Bukówka Reservoir ( Retencyjny zbiornik wody pitnej Bukówka ), which was built between 1903 and 1907 and expanded from 1978 to 1989 and serves as a flood protection and freshwater reservoir. This is where the water of the Goldbach joins the Bober , which, like all the waters mentioned, belongs to the Oder - Baltic Sea system .

Rocks and minerals

From a geological point of view, the mountain consists of metamorphic rocks . Granite , gneiss and mica slate , the bedrock of the garnet stones typical of Bohemian folk jewelry . In addition, there are intercalations of amphibolite and crystalline limestone . The limestone deposits in particular were mined for the production of quicklime . Today, disused quarries and ruins of lime kilns from the 18th century in the Silberbach valley and in several other places on the piston crest bear witness to this use.

  1. In geological terms, one understands the intercalation of a rock layer between other, predominant rock layers.

Flora and fauna

At the foot of the Borowa there are still old trees with beech and mountain ash . Small mammals such as the dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius) and pine marten (Martes martes) live here, but deer and wild boars can also be found. The mountain slopes are densely forested again after extensive forest dieback in the 1970s and 1980s. At the summit, however, it is the spruce spruce spruce spruce trees that have been created for artificial reforestation that characterize the landscape (as of 2016). As everywhere in the Giant Mountains, there is a wide variety of bird species. Woodpeckers , owls , bullfinches or redstart at higher altitudes . And the black stork can sometimes be found here at lower altitudes . The waters are not obstructed, rich in oxygen and provide habitat for trout and rare or endangered fish species such as the brook lamprey and bullhead . The valley of the Silberbach, which used to be called Freudental , offers other special features: a karst cave has formed in the limestone layer. As if that wasn't already amazing, the cave provides the opportunity for several species of bats to hibernate. The most common are: water bat , great mouse- eared bat and lesser horseshoe bat .

Tourism and nature protection

The Hoheberg is outside of the " Karkonoski Park Narodowy ". However, hikers should bear in mind that despite the extensive nature conservation regulations in the national park, areas of refuge for forest animals are limited in the region.

The hostel ( Schronisko ) "Srebrny Potok" is located in the valley of the Silberbach at 650  m above sea level . The building served the Polish border troops Wojska Ochrony Pogranicza (WOP) after the Second World War until 1948 . For a short time it then served as a base for the geological investigations that were carried out on the piston crest when searching for uranium in the 1950s. After being taken over by the Polish Society for Tourism and Local Lore Polskie Towarzystwo Turystyczno-Krajoznawcze (PTTK), it has been a good starting point for hikers, cyclists and skiers ever since.

Hiking and cycling trails

▬ Signposted in red, a hiking trail follows the easiest route to Borowa Góra. From the pass with the Polish name “Przełęcz Okraj” (German Grenzbaudenpass , Czech Pomezní Boudy - 1050 m), which is about two and a half kilometers southeast of the summit, it goes to the junction with the Polish main cycle route “Euroregionalny szlak rowerovy” (ER-2 ) below the piston mountain.
▬ Marked in yellow, the path turns east here. After about 500 meters you can reach the summit on a path that is no longer marked. This makes a distance of another 400 meters necessary.
Marked in blue, an alternative route from Jarkowice leads first into the Silberbachtal, continues with red markings in the direction of Schronisko "Srebrny Potok" and turns north at the aforementioned lime kiln, almost 400 meters behind the hostel, on a footpath with yellow signs . It goes past the rock group Białe Skały (German The White Stones - 927 m). The rather small rocks made of amphibolite and gneiss are scattered over half a kilometer. The larger ones can reach a height of several meters. In any case, they deserve attention as they are evidence of the drift of the continental plates. Apart from that, you can admire the panorama with a view of the Landeshuter Kamm , Liebauer Tor , Waldenburger Bergland , Steine Mountains , Owl Mountains , Rehorn Mountains, Raben Mountains and Habicht Mountains . Staying at the height, the path runs below the Bielec (German Weißberg - 931 m) to the already mentioned point, from which only a path without markings leads to the summit.
