Brdo pri Kranju (German Egg bei Krainburg ) is a small town north-west of the Slovenian capital Ljubljana (German: Laibach) in the Upper Carniola in the municipality of the town of Kranj (German: Krainburg) with a Renaissance castle and large parks.
location
Brdo is located about ten kilometers from Ljubljana Brnik International Airport and about 30 kilometers from Ljubljana.
Brdo Castle
Today's Brdo Castle was built around 1510 by the Carniolan nobleman Georg (Jurij) Egkh, the general administrator of the Habsburg estates in the Duchy of Carniola . It was originally built in the Renaissance style, but has been redesigned frequently since then. In the 18th century the Zois family bought the castle and it remained in their possession until 1928 (see: Michelangelo von Zois ). Then resided there u. a. the Yugoslav royal family.
After the communist seizure of power in Yugoslavia in 1945 , the castle was confiscated and from then on served Josip Broz Tito , Prime Minister until 1953, then President until his death, as a summer residence.
After Tito's death in 1980, the property became the property of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia and after Slovenia declared independence on June 25, 1991, it was transferred to this new state.
use
A new congress center in the middle of the castle park serves the government of the Republic of Slovenia as a "protocol object" in which important international conferences take place. For example, in 1996 the castle hosted the IV Alpine Conference . During the Slovenian EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2008, it was used intensively for informal EU meetings as well as for the EU-US summit, at which US President George W. Bush met with European heads of state and government.
In addition, this place is becoming increasingly important for tourism. The Brdo Castle today houses u. a. a vinotheque and a valuable collection of works by famous sculptors. The immaculate parking spaces present themselves as a treasure trove of the aristocratic Carniolan history. There is also a hippodrome , a riding school, an extensive golf course and several fish ponds .
