The Buner District is an administrative district in Pakistan in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province . The seat of the district administration is the city of Daggar .

The district has an area of ​​1865 km² and 897,319 inhabitants according to the 2017 census. The population density is 481 inhabitants / km².

geography

The district is located in the northeast of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, which is in the north of Pakistan.

history

The district was created in 1991 from parts of Swat .

In April 2009 the Taliban took control of Buner after fighting. Strict rules were reportedly enforced, including banning films and videos, trimming beards, and banning women from public spaces. On April 29, the government responded to the Taliban by sending the army into the region. By the end of May 2009, most parts of the district had been liberated from the Taliban.

Demographics

Between 1998 and 2017, the population grew by 3.05% annually. 100% of the population lives in rural regions. 446,997 men, 450,317 women and 5 transgender people live in 94,095 households , resulting in a gender ratio of 99.3 men per 100 women and thus a rare surplus of women for Pakistan.

The literacy rate in the years 2014/15 among the population over 10 years of age was 38% (women: 18%, men: 61%) and thus below the average for the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa of 53%.
