South Waziristan is an administrative district in Pakistan in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province . The district administration is seated in the Wana settlement . The district forms the southern part of the Waziristan region .

The district has an area of 6619 km² and according to the 2017 census, 674,065 inhabitants. The population density is 102 inhabitants / km².

The district is located in the southwest of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, which is in the north of Pakistan. The area consists mainly of rugged and complex hills and ridges.

The British invaded Waziristan in 1894, which until then had been part of the Durrani Empire . After British military operations from 1894 to 1895, Waziristan was divided into two agencies, North Waziristan and South Waziristan. After Pakistan's independence in 1947, the area became a federally administered tribal district . As part of the conflict in northwestern Pakistan , the area became a stronghold of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan and several military operations took place here. In 2018 the tribal areas were dissolved and South Waziristan became part of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province as a district.

Between 1998 and 2017, the population grew at an annual rate of 2.53%. The population lives 100% in rural areas and there are no larger cities. The gender ratio is 111.4 men per 100 women and thus results in a frequent male surplus for Pakistan. The Pashto language is predominantly spoken in the district. The population belongs to the Pashtun people who speak the Waziristani dialect. They have a reputation for formidable warriors and are known for their frequent blood feuds. The tribes are divided into sub-tribes, ruled by male village elders who meet in a tribal jirga. Waziristan is an extremely conservative area socially and religiously.
