history

The militant Islamists of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan , Lashkar-e-Islam and Tehreek-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi fled to what was then the Khyber Agency after the US-led war in Afghanistan in 2001. Due to the lack of strong governance in the region and the impassable, mountainous terrain, it became a hotbed of insurgents, and in 2007 over 90 percent of the Khyber Agency came under its control. After 2007, Islamists began attacking government and military facilities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, injuring and killing many people. The Pakistani army began an operation in 2008 to rid the region of Islamists and restore normal life to the region. The operation lasted years and resulted in the killing of hundreds of TTP militants and soldiers from the Pakistani Army. Eventually the activities of the militant Islamists could be rolled back.

From 1947 the area belonged to the tribal areas under federal administration . In 2018 the tribal areas were dissolved and Khyber became part of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province as a district.
