The Kurram District is an administrative district in Pakistan in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province . The city of Parachinar is the seat of the district administration . The district is named after the Kurram River.

The district has an area of ​​3380 km² and 619,553 inhabitants according to the 2017 census. The population density is 183 inhabitants / km².

Kurram was a Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan stronghold until 2008 when the Pakistani army ordered a military operation in the area to evict the militants. The operation was successfully completed in 2011.

The district is located in the central part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, which is located in northern Pakistan. It borders Afghanistan .

history

From 1947 the area belonged to the tribal areas under federal administration . In 2018 the tribal areas were dissolved and Kurram became part of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province as a district.

Demographics

Between 1998 and 2017 the population grew by 1.71% annually. Around 6% of the population live in urban regions and around 94% in rural regions. The gender ratio is 99.3 men per 100 women and thus results in a rare surplus of women for Pakistan. The Pashto language is predominantly spoken in the district.
